Am I the only person who plays songs with fingers only? Everyone tells me its way slower, but I can play alot of Slayer, Slipknot (Very fast playing if you listen), and even some Dragonforce. Am I the only person who does this?

Mark Knopler of Dire Straits does it and is a fantastic guitarist.

Usually it is going to be a drawback in your playing, but guitar playing isn't really as set-in-stone as some would have you believe. Some of the best players around break many of the basic rules that you are taught as a beginner.

I used to do that for the first 4 months I was playing..its a bit easier to move around with your left hand at first but I find I was able to get better sounds out of my guitar with the pick..also I doubt you can do pinch harmonics, and sweep picking (just thought I'd say that since it seems like you lke metal)

Yea I do for my Jazz playing, I usually get the chord I'm playing and play the notes seprately with my fingers in double time usually.

Fingerpicking is much faster and more versatile than using a pick. You'll rarely (if ever) see a classical guitarist using a pick.

I can do pinch harmonics, and sweep picking still isn't easy for me but it's manageable. And to hoobariffer87, isn't most classical just basic finger picking, Like how most people do it?

Basic?
It's possible to play guitar like a piano if you know what you're doing. You play bass notes with your thumb and first finger and use the rest for the melody. It's insanely hard to train your fingers to move like that.

All the guys fromt he Marshall Tucker Band were thumb-pickers and in my opinion they were really good guitarists.

i mix and match, it really depends on what tone im going for. i cant get a bright tone with fingers, and its quieter than with a pick. jazz and most blues i use my fingers, even for stevie ray type stuff. for things like iron maiden and pantera, i use a pick

I dont actually mean basic as in guitar playing basic, I mean not the same style as using a pick. Like playing things such as Stairway to Heaven as opposed to Raining blood.

What do you think would allow you to pick multiple notes faster? 5 fingers (1 thumb I know!) or 1 single pick? I highly recommend you learn how to do both so that you can switch between them for certain styles of music.
#17
Or just learn how to chicken pick like Zack Wylde so you can use a pick and pluck/roll with your other 3 fingers.

don't limit yourself, know both. each is appropriate in different situations. i do both myself. and like everyone's been saying, jeff beck, jeff beck, jeff beck.

oh and "playing the guitar like a piano" is not always that hard, especially with open chords. there are of course some very difficult songs for self-accompaniment, but don't be intimidated, learn lots of chord shapes and try to pick out simple tunes with the bass notes or chords included. it's very rewarding, plus you don't need to rely on a bassist or a second guitarist. (self accompaniment of course doesn't work well with distortion )

Make a recording? I wanna hear some slayer dammit.. how do you do alternate picking?!?

I take my hand and point my nail towards the headstock, then just move it back and forth. I can get insane speeds like that. And I'll post a video once I hook up my webcam.

And about pinch harmonics, I just pretend my finger is a pick and do it the same way.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOtcsP20I38&search=raining%20blood

I just hurt my wrist, so it's not as fast as it should be, but it works.

I mainly use my fingers too, but I do use a pick also. I don't see any problem with it; I love the style. Also, you can put much more emotion in than with a pick IMO.

And I didn't know Jeff Beck used his fingers...
