Creative Guitar 1: Cutting Edge Techniques by Guthrie Govan

I'm in the middle of that one and it's really good. It teaches scales and all those basics along with theory. It's great for anyone who wants to start out right. There's a CD as well with samples of all the stuff he plays. There's a LOT of info in there so a book like this would serve a guitarist for a while... it's going to last me a long time, that's for sure. He's got another one, volume 2 that's about advanced techniques to go along with all these wonderful scales in the first book.
