whats the difference between active and passive pickups? I have been looking at EMGs but people have said they only have their true bite through tube amps- which i dont have. I know the 81 and 85s that i were looking at are active so then i started looking at the cheaper EMG-HZ which are passive. does anybody know anything about these HZs sound?

passives have a better clean sound while actives have a better metal sound....only real difference, plus the actives run on battery.

If youre going to get passives there are a lot better ones out there other then hzs. As for active emgs are great. If you want a better passive get a dimarzio or seymour depending on what your looking for

EMG> EMG hz

Hey, Alexi Laiho uses EMGhz and I've never even heard him even play clean.

^^^
He didn't say they were meant for cleans, he said they were better at playing cleans.

I love the sound of EMGs, but I think the sound of an active EMG is way better than the passive, distorted or not.
