Do you guys think that there should be a thread with just an archive of the best covers people have put up here? Like cover songs that you could put on your ipod and would want to listen to, maybe even better than the original?

Feel free to post the great covers you've seen around here, (make sure they're good quality too!)

yeah but we could group them all in one place.

I like this idea actually. There have been some pretty amazing covers on here that really do need some recognition rather than crumbling into the flames of the pruning, and lost forever. The only problem I can see happening is difference of opinion on what is classed as a really good recording, so you'd have to have some form of voting scheme so that popularity ensures a place in the UG Recordings hall of fame. And, would you have a separate one for the Covers and Written songs, or would it include both? What about just riffs that have been recorded? Does it have to be old songs.

Would need some time and effort, but I love the idea

Yeah there have been some really good ones. I remember when that guy posted the cover of MoP. It was awesome. I don't remember his name.

Betrayer = Holy Wars......The Punishment Due

the vocals sound almost exact to Dave's. The whole band kicked A** on that song!

^Ya..but search that song under the Cover section and find the one that has like 150 replies. It is stellar.

I thought my Liquid Tension cover was good but I got like one reply, If you've heard of Liquid Tension Experiment and/or like John Petrucci check it out gtgram.dmusic.com.

As for the best covers I've heard

some guy did turn turn turn a while back and it was absolutley amazing.

There was an instrumental crazy train that was described as "Crazy train with Wylde harmonics" or something

And VHaholic's version of Panama, it was, well, perfect

There have been more but those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head

There should be an X amount of replies prerequisite. That and a gorup of musically different people to judge. Maybe even X amount of people nominating that it should be inducted.

Other than that, i thought the cover of Imagine done by Andy/nate (i think) was completeley amazing.

Didn't think this was a thread for people to actually vote (expecially themselves :no for their favourite recording? Thought we were just discussing the actual impact that such a forum would have. Of course there would be cases where people get upset they are not listed etc. etc. As well as people voting for themselves, so a tough panel is needed to instigate the whole thing.

If there were to be a thread like this, it should only feature full songs. No "solo only" or instrumental versions (unless the song is an instrumental).
#38
why not compile a list of songs you and a couple other judges think should be voted on and then post a poll and let the people vote?

that's not fair to people who don't have the ability to create backing tracks or who don't have a mic, etc... a good cover is a good cover regardless... if someone pulls out a sick but completely original solo to a RHCP song (as an example) and changes around some other minor things in the song, it shouldn't matter as long as its quality music and talented playing..

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.

This idea I like. You could even have a section for each of them, i.e: full covers, improvs, solos etc. That way it'd be easier to keep tabs on the bits you like, rather than having to flick through loads of other types of recording.

I also like the idea of a poll. The only thing is, would you have someone suggest an idea as a poll, and keep it open for a set number of days, or have a specialised poll where the 'elite' members, or those chosen for opinion would be able to vote on? The only problem there is that people will nominate themselves, and there will be loads and loads of suggestions in the forum putting the actual recordings down.
