Well, I - as well as many other guitarists, I'm sure - have always wondered how my progression as a guitarist measures up with my fellow guitarist peers. I've always had the sense (more like certainty) that I'm an extremely slow learner when it comes to the instrument, and I've finally decided to see whether this is true. Here's a questionaire to all you guitarists out there; hopefully this can help clarify what's average and what's the "norm" so as to put to rest all that doubt and uncertainty.

How many months have you been playing guitar?

How many hours do you play per week?

Predominantly acoustic, electric, or some combo of the two?

How good are you at:

Sweep-picking?

Tapping?

Shredding?

Singing while playing chords?

Singing while playing lead?

Name three popular songs that you can play without even thinking:

Name three popular songs that you can play, but would have to concentrate while doing so:

Name three popular songs that are currently above your skill level:

How long does it take you to master and memorize a guitar solo? Give an example.

About how many full songs have you written?

Are they at or below your skill level?

Do you write solos or record them improvised?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that's all. I'll be posting mine shortly. Hopefully the results should be interesting and enlightening to read
How many months have you been playing guitar? 25
How many hours do you play per week? 7-16, depending on school.
Predominantly acoustic, electric, or some combo of the two?
Pretty equal combo of both.
How good are you at:
Sweep-picking? Very slow and clumsy. Need a LOT of work.
Tapping? Slow and clumsy; need to strengthen my tapping finger.
Shredding? Slow as hell. Meh.
Singing while playing chords?
I've gotten better. I might still easily completely lose the rythym or strumming pattern.
Singing while playing lead? Heh. An impossibility.
Name three popular songs that you can play without even thinking:
AFI - Bleed Black
Sum 41 - The Hell Song
Weezer - Say It Ain?t So
(yes I suck)
Name three popular songs that you can play, but would have to concentrate while doing so:
Bach - Bouree
Metallica - Fade To Black
Muse - Screenager
Name three popular songs that are currently above your skill level:
Mozart - Turkish March (at the correct speed)
Oscar Lopez - Classical Soul
Yngwie Malmsteem - Arpeggios From Hell
How long does it take you to master and memorize a guitar solo? Give an example.
Pretty much forever. I started learning the Fade To Black solo about a year ago and I've just finished memorizing it. It's not so much being able to play a solo so much as it is memorizing it.
About how many full songs have you written? Maybe around 15.
Are they at or below your skill level? They're all below my skill level.
Do you write solos or record them improvised? I've improvised two, and written five.
How many months have you been playing guitar?
about 18
How many hours do you play per week?
I'd say 10 or more, depending on my mood.
Predominantly acoustic, electric, or some combo of the two?
I like to mix, cause I have multiple influences, and I like the sound of each pretty much the same.
How good are you at:
Sweep-picking?
I have no skill at it. I've tried before, but moved on, cause I was waiting till I had a litt more skill to try again.
Tapping?
Beginner if anything. I just found out that I could after trying SOOO many times, but now I'm pretty standard at it. Definitely not accurate yet, but I'm working on it.
Shredding?
Same story as sweeping, I'm waiting till IU'm a little more confident.
Singing while playing chords?
I'm learning progressivley how to do this. I've started easy, I can sing/play "Purple Haze" and more of the easier ones, especially 90s stuff, like Weezer, and Smashing Pumpkins, cause they are simpler to play and I can play them confidently and sing too.
Singing while playing lead?
No, I'm still not coordinated enough yet.
Name three popular songs that you can play without even thinking:
All the way through?? Um
-Don't Fear The Reaper- Blue Oyster Cult minus the solo, but I play the rhythm behind it, so it's the whole song
-End of Heartache- Killswitch Engage it's simple but really sweet sounding.
-Jesus of Suburbia- Green Day and don't start on me about being a fanboy, cause I'm not. Actually this is the only song I wanted to learn all of off of American idiot, cause it's a 9 minute epic, all barre chords, and it's actually a great exercize for your thumb, cause since it is all barre chords, you're constantly holding your thumb in the same place. and it's a really catchy song in itself.
Name three popular songs that you can play, but would have to concentrate while doing so:
Um... None all the way through, cause I like to learn different parts of songs in sequence, and when I'm confident about that part, I move on, so I always have a good grasp of the whole song I'm playing.
Name three popular songs that are currently above your skill level:
Avenged Sevenfold songs, cause they have those shred-like solos, and I still can't move my fingers that fast and still be accurate.
Lamb of God, same reason, they're really fast players, and their songs are complicated, and it takes me a minute to realize that the parts of each song.
Randy Rhoads. Again, he has that neo classical shred, and it's just not my time learn it yet. lol
How long does it take you to master and memorize a guitar solo? Give an example.
Well, however long I need. It took me about 2 hours when I first learned Smells Like Teen Spirit, even when I was still pretty noobish, but stuff like Stairway to Heaven, I can hear every note I see on the page, and I comprehend it, but it's gonna be a while before I can move my fingers that fast and accurately. Get what I'm saying?
About how many full songs have you written?
Um....1, and a bunch pf pieces to others, I just need good leads for most.
Are they at or below your skill level?
I'd say at, I don't try and dumb my music down, the riffs are pretty simple, but I like good, sturdy lead. And that's my problem right now.
Do you write solos or record them improvised?
I try and write them, my problem is remembering what I played after playing it without just writing down everything I just played.
How many months have you been playing guitar?
3 years, so, 36 months (aprox.)
How many hours do you play per week?
Hard to keep track, since I don't quite have a schedual... But very little. Not more than 10/12.
Predominantly acoustic, electric, or some combo of the two?
A combo.
How good are you at:
Sweep-picking?
Terrible.
Tapping?
Mediocre.
Shredding?
Ridiculously bad.
Singing while playing chords?
Will do.
Singing while playing lead?
Won't do.
Name three popular songs that you can play without even thinking:
Popular? Well, I don't play much popular stuff... Californication by RHCP, Good Riddance by Greenday and Hysteria by Muse should be around the most known.
Name three popular songs that you can play, but would have to concentrate while doing so:
Can't think of any.
Name three popular songs that are currently above your skill level:
Same... Well, define popular. If you mean popular so that you play it to a crowd and most people know it, then I can't think of any again.
How long does it take you to master and memorize a guitar solo? Give an example.
Depends of the solo. But if I really like it, and it doesn't strecht my skills too much, a day or two. Examples... Another Brick In The Wall took me an afternoon, and when I learnt it (a year or two ago) it was damn hard for me..
About how many full songs have you written?
None... only bits and pieces of riffs.
Do you write solos or record them improvised?
How many months have you been playing guitar?
About a month and half from 2 full years.
How many hours do you play per week?
I'd say around 10-14.
Predominantly acoustic, electric, or some combo of the two?
Electric.
How good are you at:
Sweep-picking?
Decent. I know the 5 most common 5-string shapes and can play them at around 168 bpm in in triplets.
Tapping?
One finger tapping is easy. Haven't tried any multi fingers technique though.
Shredding?
Shredding is too objective. I can play a handful of Marty Friedman solos and can figure out most rock lead playing by myself.
Singing while playing chords?
Don't really do it but I can sing and play normal rock types of songs if I wanted to.
Singing while playing lead?
Never tried. Probably can't.
Name three popular songs that you can play without even thinking:
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze (correctly, with all the articulations), Megadeth - Holy Wars, Alice In Chains - Man In The Box
Name three popular songs that you can play, but would have to concentrate while doing so:Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls solo, Megadeth - Hangar 18 solos, Metallica - Master Of Puppets, ..there aren't really hard songs that are popular...
Name three popular songs that are currently above your skill level:
again, popular songs usually aren't technically challenging. A lot of shred is out of my reach. So is a lot of jazz and classical.
How long does it take you to master and memorize a guitar solo? Give an example.
I can memorize a typical solo in about an hour and get the hang of playing all the way through. Takes a few days to master them. For example, I memorized the first two Marty Friedman solos in Hangar 18 after the bottom half of the song and spent about 3-4 days to play it well.
About how many full songs have you written?
About 2 full songs. I like progressive songs with lots of intricate parts in it so it would take me a while to get done with one.
Are they at or below your skill level?
At. Some of the solos I challenge myself to are pretty hard for me.
Do you write solos or record them improvised?
For jamming I'll improvise but I like the idea of writing out solos for real songs because it gives the solos more meaning.
