ok 300 quid, if you wanna be metal you can get an ESP LTD EC50, F50 or an M50 and a crybaby from thomann.de (i live in london and i get everything from thomann because their prices are often 20% or so cheaper, its insane but you have to pay 7 quid with HSBC for an international money transfer).
#5
yeah, that or probably and ibanez, or just get the best wah pedal you can and buy a mini humbacker, or a mini burstbucker, you get extra variation that way

not sure about those LTDs but i've heard that low end models are made from bad wood...
#7
yer i think it's basswood or something, but i guess ppl like the brand (i've got a ESP LTD F-2005 so i guess i can't recommend the lower end ones)

I thought those LTD's were made of Agathis?...i think they are.

DEFINITELY second hand/new rg321mh on ebay, they come up every so often + the best wah you can then afford, vox 847 is fairly unanimously an awesome choice.

actually dont think there is a good one out of those. best bet would be second hand rg321mh or brand new one

I'd agree with that. As for the wah i'd get a morley tremonti power wah. I doubt you can get two better pieces of gear for £300.

Dammit I can't decide. Now Im starting to lean in the direction off an epiphone again, maybe an sg or a les paul. And now Im also thinking of an Ibanez rg321mh I play mostly rock with a bit of metal, and I shred alot. If that helps.

EDIT: Does anyone know where i can hear aclip of any of these guitars on the internet?

Just had another thought. I love whammy bars. Can i get a RG321MH or something similar with a whammy bar/tremolo or whatever the hell you call it? Does it affect tone? As you can see I dont have that much knowledge of guitars :p
#22
whammy bar. ummm you mean like a Floyd Rose well i dont think there are many cheap models that have a reliable tremolo really. and about hearing clips over the internet i wouldnt trust but rather play the guitar myself to get a feel of it.

Go with the RG321mh and a Morley Tremonti Wah, that with your Roland cube 60 is bound to get good tone .

I'd probably get a Yamaha AES 420/620 (you can try the 420 in Marcus, then order from somewhere cheaper like www.gak.co.uk (£250 for the 420, £289 for the 620) ) or Washburn WI65 pro (they had them in nicholl brothers in the main street in ballymena, last time I was there, at £289). The 620 and the washburn have real Duncans, which aren't like the best pickups ever, but really very good for the price. Good enough not to switch, like ever, pretty much, unless you're a real tone hound. A boon for the price range.

they're about £300 each, but I'd say it's worth it, and get the wah pedal later. That's my 2 cents anyway.

EDIT: oooh, or take a look at lag. They had them in Music Matters in Lisburn. There's a £200 one. More a metal/shred guitar, but really good. A lot better than the rg321, IMO (if you're considering it)- and they had that one too (last time I was in), so you could compare them. They also had roland cubes, so you could try them through your amp.

www.lag.fr (in french, but it's pretty straightforward).

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

^^^^ Dear God! Ive never seen anyone on this forum who knows where ballymena is! But i think im gonna stick with the ibanez. BTW trevor keys music round the corner form nicholls is cooler because they dont alarm their guitars :p Now im in another confusion- which wah?
#32
^ seriously, the lag is better (in my opinion). If you can get to Lisburn at all, it's totally worth going to the shop to try it, seriously, just because you haven't heard of the brand doesn't mean Ibanez is better. The cheaper Ibanezes really aren't that great, IMO.

If you're playing a reasonable amount of classic rock, though, either the yamaha or the washburn is a lot better, IMO- the ibanez (ditto the lag) is very much aimed at metal/shred, and has pretty high output (and toneless) pickups that won't work very well for classic rock like AC/DC.

Basically, unless you totally end up blowing your budget on bus/train tickets, lol, you might as well get to those places to try those guitars. And a good guitar >> wah pedal, which you can get later...

and that other shop in Ballymena, if it's the one I'm thinking of, doesn't have very good guitars, lol. But it's true, alarming £300 guitars is kind of overkill...

and I know where ballymena is, because I'm from Northern Ireland, lol.

Anyway, this is my opinion, but it's worth considering... definitely don't decide on a guitar before trying it...

EDIT: and if you can get to lisburn, there's a new shop (guitar galleria) which has vintage guitars, so you could try them too.

Are there any UK websites you can order Lag's from? They look really good, but I've only seen them in France.
#34
^ i'm not sure. I know that lisburn shop has them, but I don't think they have a website...

hang on.

EDIT: ok, there's no distributor info on the lag website (which may or may not be due to my tenuous grip on french...), but in an old guitar buyer mag i hoked out, there's a review on some lags, and there's a phone number- barnes and mullins (sounds like a made-up bookstore... ) 01691 652449

It might be worth a shot to see if there are any other UK lag dealers (i assume there are).

Oh, I have a feeling arena music in cambridge may stock them- i remember seeing an advert in a mag with lags in it.

www.arena-music.co.uk (think that's the site). EDIT: I don't see any lags on their site. But they're worth trying anyway.

^ easier than an RG321, IMO- most ibanezes have lollypop style necks, really thin, but the rg321 is a bit thicker.

So yeah, the lag is a shred/metal machine. And has very hot pickups too. go to www.lag.fr and look at the jet series, those are the ones at that shop in lisburn- the matt design 100.

but how badly do you want classic rock tones too?

^ are you after mainly metal? what percentage (roughly) of classic rock versus modern metal?

(of course, you could change the pickups later if they don't suit the tones you're after, but you are on a limited budget, so not much point in starting out immediately having to change them...)

garg. the worst percentage, lol. You play enough metal to warrant metal pickups, but also enough classic rock to warrant not getting super hot pickups.

Best thing I can advise is to try (if you can) the yamaha, the washburn, the lag and the ibanez (through your amp if at all possible), and see which you prefer... it's crappy advice, but at the end of the day it's all preference anyway...
