Vibrato usually refers to the technique, involving shaking the string with the fretting hand.

Tremolo refers to the pedal or the bar sticking out of your axe, producing a similar effect, although not quite the same.

Tremolo pedals make the volume swell in a cyclic pattern. Did that make sense?
