i think

grindcore: punk + death metal
hardcore: hardcore punk (heavier punk i guess)
metalcore: metal + hardcore (lighter hardcore)

its ****ing gay having all these subgenres, i wish they would die.

yeah, I don't go by these stupid exactions. I just go by simpler things like prog rock, punk rock, death metal, and such.
#5
I just go by 4 categories: Good Metal, Bad Metal, Country, and Rap. But only Good Metal is good.

Genres are good, but only if they remain broad... when you subdivide genres, your genre name is just a fancy way of describing the sound of just a handful of similar bands. In my humble opinion, here's a fairly complete list of reasonable genres in western music:

Rock
Punk Rock
Metal
Jazz
Blues
Electronic (aka any music that can't be made without some kind of computer)
Hip-Hop
Pop / Dance music (anything that is manufactured for a mass youth audience)
Country
Folk
Adult contemporary (soft rock, easy listening)
Classical

that's about all i got...

And what about all these?

Fasioncore
Grindcore
Moshcore
Mathcore
Deathcore
Swede-core
Emotional Metalcore
Power Violence
Crust Punk
Melodic Hardcore
Thrashcore
Heavy Metal
Death Metal
Thrash Metal
Hardcore
Doom Metal
Folk Metal
Glam Metal
Gothic Metal
Groove Metal
Neo-Classic Metal
Classic Metal
Power Metal
Progressive Metal
Alt. Metal
Industrial Metal
Metalcore
Rapcore
Stoner Metal
Symphonic Metal
Operatic Metal
Viking Metal
Blackened Death metal
Screamo
Emocore
Emotional Punk
Anarcho-punk

While the differences may seem silly to some people, I don't see a ton of metal fans getting upset over all the subgenres. Yes, there are some weird ones, but there are significant differences between, say, power metal and death metal, and having the differences explained shortens the process when looking for new bands.

With that being said, limiting your choice of music to a few subgenres is not the best idea, but I think music fans can figure that out for themselves.

i have actually come up with my own method of dividing genres, by basing them on the most popular band of that subgenre. its all quite simple, and everyone understands it because they recognize the bands.

so if i asked you what a band was like, you'd rather spend ages describing the music than say "well its kinda doom metal, but a couple of tracks have a real black metal edge to them"?

i get how it can be annoying, but it does serve a purpose. porpoise. dolphin.

Rhinosuar, you forgot "Nintendocore"

And from what I can tell, Metalcore is Metal that the metalheads don't like.

But theyll disagree of course and say something about breakdowns.

The categories are there just to organize music. Some people like it, others don't.

Grindcore = Crust Punk + Metal.
Metalcore = Hardcore + Metal (usually melodeath)
Thrash/Crossover = Thrash metal + the more Punk type of Hardcore.
Deathcore = Hardcore + Death Metal.

That's what i've gathered anyway.

Minibosses are nintendocore. They're excellant. But yea there is far too many genres and many of them are very simaliar. It seems to me that if someone doesn't like a particular genre but likes a certain band of that genre that they move it to seem credible. Its bull****.

If you can't name at least three other bands that are "Nintendocore" then I move that it be disregarded as a genre.
