so i want to be able to use something other than the usual minor pentatonic and scales such as that so what are some commonly used exotic scales

Harmonic Minor and Phrygian Major both have a pretty exotic touch to them.
Of course, there are a bunch of foreign ones that always sound exotic. Like, say:
Arabian (sort of)
Byzantine
Chinese
Double Harmonic
Hirajoshi [awesome]
Hungarian Minor
...etc. etc. etc.; the list goes on. You can find them all at this super-awesome scales site:

I know, there are a bunch there that I'd never even heard of before. I think there are actually more scales on that site alone than there are in this book of scales that I paid for. It's good stuff, I'm glad you like it.
