You have to tune to open tunings. I am not sure of the exact ones. Basically the slide acts as a fret. You can get notes that weren't necessarily available to you before because there were no frets there to make them. Don't put to much pressure on it. Just enough to really touch the strings. Then you can slide around and have some fun. Check Cyberfret.com for some lessons.

Open E tunning as well, Listen to The Derek Trucks Band and the Allman Brothers Band for good slide songs.

You dont have to tune to open tunings, though.
For example, DGB strings are major, GBE are minor.
