How good are the EMG-HZ passive pickups?

I am interested in buying this guitar cort EVL-K4.
http://www.cort.co.kr/english/products/common/view.asp?product_id=105

It has EMG HZ passive pickups in it and i've heard a lot of people saying they arent good.. are they above or below average when it comes to stock pickups that cost less than 400$ guitars?

How are they on clean/distortion? how versatile are they?

I'm planing on buying this guitar as my first guitar and metal is my favourite genre.

They're probably more metal than other stock pickups, not the most amazing thing but they'll work.

Apart from Schecters I can't think of any guitars that have more than decent pickups in that range.

and if this is your first guitar I'd worry more about your amp if you want a metal tone

My guess is the guy has been playing an electroacoustic allready or something like that.
