Are these things any good? I've heard about them on here but never really looked into them. How do they sound for cheaper tube amps?

Really depends on what sound you want out of them. Good amps for like a more vintage sound or older rock, you'll need a boost for modern rock or metal or something along those lines and even then it still won't be as good as a higher gain amp. I've heard they sometimes randomly crap out on people, but for the price it's a pretty good deal.

I don't play anything with huge amounts of distortion...Plus if I ever would I could just pick up a distortion pedal.

Distortion pedal =/= tube amp, OD pedal = tube amp.

Then I would go for it, sounds like it's a nice upgrade from the MG and it will fit the sounds you like without you having to get a bunch of stuff for it.

The only place I'm not a n00b is the EG forum...

Yes, OVERDRIVE pedal.

I'm really thinking about it...Are they really full tube, or do they just have one tube in the preamp and one tube in the poweramp for the gimmick factor? I guess that would still be "full tube", but don't normal tube amps have four tubes in the preamp and four in the poweramp?

I know nothing about Valvekings except that they are a pretty good deal for the money . Honestly, unless you want to spend A LOT of money on a really nice tube amp, the valveking is a really good deal, I don't know how many tubes are in it but it is all tube. You could probably go to the Peavey website and check it out .

Musician's Friend for the win.

Peavey Valveking 100W head:

100W all-tube power
Texture variable Class A/B simulation control
2 footswitchable channels
EQ and volume for each channel
Footswitchable gain/volume boost on lead channel
Reverb with level control
Buffered effects loop
Resonance and presence controls
Dual speaker jacks in parallel
4 - 6L6GC power amp tubes
3 - 12AX7 preamp tubes
4, 8, or 16 ohms
21-1/3"W x 18-1/4"H x 10-1/4"D
44-1/2 lbs.

And yes, I know a halfstack is a ton of power...but A) it would be good for gigging and band practice, and B) Who doesn't love halfstacks?!?!

And tube halfstacks are way cooler than MG's!!

For that price though idk, I would just get the 1x12 combo myself. 50w all tube combo for 400 bucks that's a great deal.

Like being cooler than an MG is hard to do?

I saw the combo for $400, but would that withstand live playing well enough? Would the halfstack be more useful?

Yup Yup snag the valveking combo man. For one unless you are gigging like once or twice a week the halfstack is kind of overkill, plus like Eric said, the combo will do great at a gig, I know my 2x12 5150 hasn't let me down

You nkow what the saddest thing is? And I mean horribly sad and pathetic?

The 50w combo version is only $25 more than my MG was. -_-

Luckily, the guy I bought it from will take the MG as trade in and put $375 towards another amp...

I really like the halfstack though.

I'm really proud that you're getting rid of the MG..

It would be at least a couple weeks. He doesn't normally carry peavey's, so he'd have to special order it. And he won't change his mind. He's a nice guy who gives fair trade-in if you keep your gear in good condition.

Also, does the 50w combo only have two tubes for the poweramp because it only has one speaker? The 100w combo has four, the 100w head has four, Does the 50w only have two because it's half the wattage and only has one speaker? Or should it have 4 as well?

Yea half stacks are great but in all honesty unless you can ONLY get it in a head form halfstacks are more or less for coolness factors. You can always get the combo now and later on down the road get a 4x12 or 2x12 and then you can use that for gigs or when you want to go CRAZY and still have the portability and volume control of the combo.
All Hail! The Kala-Kala Chieftain!

^True. And right now I'm just practicing on my own. Hopefully I'll get a band together soon, and then soon after hopefully gigging. But that's still a while down the road. I can always just trade up later on if I really *need* a halfstack.

^Ok, thanks a lot. I'm thinking this is the amp for me! Fully tube and only $25 more to trade up to...

Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm going to see if I can find a local dealer to go try one out at, and if I like it I'll most likely have him order one in for me and make the trade.

yea myself I feel into the Spider's trp went in wanting to buy a Roland and here's more or less what happened.

Cody: Hey I'm looking to buy a nice metal amp, I came to check out some Rolands.

Seller: Nah you should look at Line6 Spider II's they're great metal amps!

Cody: Ok I'll check 'em out.

*Seller plays some random stuff on the Spider*

Seller: See they are great for metal!

Cody: Yea I'd still like to check out the Roland's though...

Selling: No. You want this amp.

Cody: Ok I want that amp.

Seller: Ok I'll wrap it up and charge you an extra $150 for the footswitch and cables too!

Cody: Sounds like a great deal hook me up!

Oh well gotta learn somehow

Yeesh. I don't get why they try to sell these sh*t amps that are teh same price as GOOD amps. It doesn't make sense! They make the same amount of money either way, but still sell the POS amps and ignore the good ones!

That's all it is, a selling game. It's more or less the only way they will sell them, and they know that good or experianced player's will come in looking for the better gear so they try to push crap gear on new guitarist
