Well I'm looking for a way to improve my tone, i want the higher strings (GBE) to have a little deeper tone. I know changing my strings is a first thing, but what are the alternatives.

What I Have:

Peavy VTM 60 Head
Carvin Legacy Vai Signiture Cabinet 4x12
Digitech Death-Metal Pedal
Ernie Ball Hyrbid Slinky 46-9.
iBanez GRG170DX guitar
1.50 Dunlop Picks.

Can you give me some more info on the head? I'm not familiar with the model.

Two problems I can see is the pedal and the guitar.

A cheap distortion pedal will not get you a full tone....ever.

Next, the pickups on the guitar, if stock, are going to sound thin.

I know the VTM60's all tube but that's about all I know

And +1 to the cheap distortion pedal, grab a nice OD for the VTM60

EDIT: Grab some 3.0mm picks too

The head is all tube, there are only 2 tubes because its only 60 watts. What kind of distortion pedal would u recommend, i was thinking about upgrading to a Boss Metal Zone, stock pickups on my guitar.

NOOOOO!

No distortion pedals with tube amps...it basically takes the tube tone and makes it solid state (distortion pedals give solid state tone)....why do so if you have a tube amp?

For more gain, you'll need an overdrive pedal. You'll use it, over the dirty channel of your amp, to push even more gain out of it!

A Keeley modded Boss SD-1 makes an amazing gain boost!

Well, if you like your current tone and would like more low end w/o coloring it, I recommend the BBE sonic stomp - $99 bucks and it's pretty damn sweet. Not only will it clean up your tone, you can dial in that lower end w/o losing clarity.

BBE FTW

The best way to get the exact tone you're after is to save up for some type of guitar workstation, i.e. Digitech GNX4 or something that you can use to build your own tones and mods from the ground up. It's double what you're looking to spend, but you'll never have to buy single effects again, which at anywhere from $40-150 and up could end up costing you more in the long run.

I said overdrive
lol

I recommend either a BOSS SD-1 or an Ibanez TS.

I want to use my tube power but i want something with high gain and modern sounding, should i change my tubes? Because they are still stock, i heard russian tubes are really hot.

Use an overdrive over the overdrive channel of your amp...it will get you the gain you're looking for.

Don't get a digital processor.....

DO NOT Get the BBE......

All you need is an overdrive. A keeley SD-1 is $135....with the rest, get some better pickups!

The Keely SD-1 is a little pricey, does the TS9 do a good job for my tubes? i have the money but i want to spend as little.

your amp would be a hybrid. not a tube. 60 watts would require more than 2 tubes.

Uhm, yeah. Get off the hybrids and get a full set of .10's, and get some new pickups.

Those will help the most significantly.

And uh, unless I'm wrong, your amp has 4 12ax7 preamp tubes and 2 6L6GC powertubes...

His amp isn't too bad though. For the money he's talkng about a pedal would improve things dramatically.

Ibanez/Maxon TS-9 or TS808
Subdecay stupid box
Keeley SD-1
Fulltone '69

I disagree. I use a ProCo Rat with my Boogie and I love it. You could also try a deeper voiced cab.
