after you build it you could put it in a cigarette box like those smokey amps. or you could mount it in the guitar you're building, that could be cool.

The Ruby is a great amp, good luck.
I'm not very active here on UG currently.

I made on with a transistor, caps, resistors, and pots. Maybe its just me but I'm not a big fan of the LM386, BTW the Ruby is the ame circuit as the Smokey amp.
PM me with talkbox questions.

It's more adjustable. The Smokey amp is solely dependent on your guitar's volume pot, but the Ruby has a Volume and Gain control.

Well, I haven't done it yet, but I plan to. My price would be less than what it might cost you, because I have the tools, and have some 1 watt speaker lying around, but send me a PM and i'll let you know when I order my part how much it costs.

30 bucks that would be a dodgy speaker no??

I've got an old 2 watt PC speakerI plan on using just for the hell of it (though that might be not enough headroom)

a LM386 is like $1, two pots are also $1, all the other parts aren't more than $2, jacks are $1 each too, you just have to find an enclosure for it

Two pots for $1.00?? You mean each right? Where I live a pot costs more like $2.00-$3.00.

I made one of those for a school project (not a ruby though, a completely original design.) It had a rotating speaker, treble middle and bass controls and 2 channels. The preamp was basically just cascaded common source amplifiers (although I think there's a cascode in there somewhere.) The tone stack is a baxandall style 3 band active EQ but I added an adjustable centre frequency instead of a "real" mid control. The OD channel is basically just another stage added at the end with a diode clipping circuit. The power amp was based on a single ended op-amp design and can manage around 8 watts with the heat sink I used. The speaker was a crappy one from a car repair shop, it cost me £4 and covers the frequency range of a guitar.

How does it sound? Pretty buzzy. lol. Not the greatest thing in the world but it's sure better than most low wattage portable amps I've tried! And let me just say this thing absolutely destroys batteries, you need 2 9Vs to power my circuit and these get drained in about half an hour if you don't use an adaptor.

And before people ask: no I don't have schematics for the thing.. And yes it's made of some dirty plastic stuff... And yes that is my signature.

okay i got it made thanks guys for the links. i built a variant of the Ruby. only difference is i left out one of the semiconductors. not the main one but the other one on the pcb, pdf thing. it crackles a little when the volume is cranked but it gets the job done for what i need (a little outdorr, portable practice amp).

again thanks for the links and help guys. it only cost me 27 dollars and about an hour of time.
