So far, When I play my guitar all I do is use my thumb. I pluck and strum with it all in a downward motion. Ive learned about 5 chords, so I think my next step should be how to finger pick. What are some good ways to learn/practice fingerstyle picking?

Your next step should be getting a pick so you don't tear up your thumb, and then Working on getting good before you even try fingerstyle. It's not easy.

this song is pretty easy to get started on finger style: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/misc_traditional/romanza_tab.htm (the 2nd part is a bit tricky, mainly for the left hand though)

or maybe http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/c/classical/greensleeves_tab.htm

in general: you're thumb plays the bottom 3 strings, your index, middle and pinky are used for the top 3 strings (though you can move then down one string depending on what you're playing)

though if you plan on playing general popular rock/metal/whatever guitar you might as well pick up a pick (of course there is the odd guitarist that doesn't use a pick, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits as the prime example but really, don't only use your thumb)

Thanks for the songs, but im aving a bit of trouble with romanza. Mainly because i cant spread my fingers far enough to play it (the left hand).

I have a classical guitar and the frets and strings are pretty far apart. I can barely have on finger on 8 and one at 5 on the same string let alone 2 on 5 and them both being on different strings. Any advice on how to do this?

barre the 5 with your index finger and play the 8 with your pinky

I somehow managed to learn the song on my classical when I had been playing for 2 months

though yeah, that second half of the song is pretty hard (I never learned it)
