So, I have $500 dollars to spend on a guitar, and I've been thinking about purchasing this guitar... I play a lot of metal... Metallica is what I'm stuck on right now. Would this guitar be good for playing metal? Or would I be better off getting a $500 Ibanez RG.

Well since it's the Kirk Hammett sig guitar it's probably great for metallica .
But I don't have any experience with esps so I'm not sure if this model will do any kind of metal..

a) the pickups are crap pretty much
b) you want metal, dont bother with guitar at all mate. what amp do you use?
c) if you want metallica sounds try to get a mesa boogie amp. and use emg 81 pickups for Kirk's lead tone
d) it depends on what Ibanez RG model it is

the guitar might just pass off as ok, but the pickups, like 'Phil' said, are crap, and the build quality wont be that good either.
Perhaps get an RG but you have to be pretty careful about those too: i.e which one you choose.
A M/B amp is a good idea but you need, what, about £2000? yup. so yeah, that can come later.
How long have you been playing and what amp do you use?

It's pretty low quality
1. Basswood body
2. Passive EMG's
3. LFR

I'd stay away from it if I was you, the amp is going to affect your tone much more, but if you're looking for a good metal guitar maybe look at the Ibanez S470 and change the pups to EMG's or check out the Schecter Hellraiser FR, something like that is much better quality for the price.

If you got

A standard strat
change to emg pickups
get a mesa boogie amp
a distortion pedal e.g. tubescreamer or the death metal one

I reckon that would get you that Metallica tone.

he said he's looking for the metallica tone, does kirk or james have guitars made of basswood? I didnt think so.

fair enough, you're right. but 'cred' (of the "Street" kind) to all those who agreed about the coolness of basswood.

well that guitar does suck....i had it for a week and took it back..it was just horrable..never stayed in tune..sounded crapy...and had the worst neck joints..it was all bulky
i would suggest a LTD M-400, MH-400, schecter hellraiser fr,a Jackson DKMG dinky

those are all good guitars..same basic shape and features as the 202...but those ARE WAY BETTER..they might be 200 more or so...but its worth it..never cheap out on guitar equipment
