Yo

Sometimes when I yawn, something inside of my bottom jaw just starts swelling up uncontrolably (i can feel it with my fingers when it happens). It feels basically like the muscles just under my mouth are have a battle royale, with chairs and garbage cans and stuff. When it happens, I'm frozen with excrutiating painfor about 5-10 seconds, so much that I literally can't move or do anything else until the pain subsides.

Does anyone else experience such a phenomenon?

Any idea what it could be? Should I go see my doctor?

that's creepy. i can crack my jaw voluntarily, but i don't know if it's related....can you do that? how long has this been happening? you probably should see a doctor.

I know when I yawn I always get a muscle in my neck, the main ones that go up to your head, that cramps really badly for a few seconds. It hurts like hell, then snaps back and I continue on. I know of several people who yawned and stretched and hurt their necks, including myself, but that is only a fluke every once in a while. Don't know, don't yawn lol.

lock jaw? if so try increasing the amount of iron in your diet but to be honest it sounds more like an injury from a punch to the face or w/e in which case the doctors would either tell you to let it be or wire your jaw shut, depending on the severity

or you coul just b wierd

I know some people who have a thing called TMJ which makes their jaw lock sometimes. Mabye it's that.

Hmmm, might wanna get that checked...I have jaw problems too...sometimes mine gets stuck open and I sit there in pain till I can pop the thing back in...I finally went to the doctor and it turned out to be a number of factors. Iron Deficiency, Premature Arthritis in the jaw and muscle trauma turned out to be my causes...

But if you aren't sure what's causing it, it's not gonna fix itself...best call the doc, man, not us "specialists" at UG.

there's a doctor in the house. but unfortunately, i'm not that kinda doctor. i'm the psychiatrist kind. you could pay me to listen to what problems you're having but it won't do you any good.

but what i can do is encourage you to go there.

i dunno if its the same thing...but sometimes if i yawn really big (like those one's where you almost have to make a sound vs. the ones where you just exhale), i get a muscle spasm, i guess just from being way too tense or something. basically, a really sharp but short lived cramp. sometimes i just have to bury my face in my hands until the pain goes away. it rarely ever happens (usually only when i'm in school, and even then not that often ), but enough times that i remember them.

yeah that happens to me. ive always thought its the same thing as when yousuddenly get a horrible cramp in your lef or something where it feels lik ethe muscle is gonna contract itself into a little ball, and you gotta streatch it out really fast or else it hurts like a bitch.

if the pain goes up the side of your neck and into your jaw where the joint is at, you're most likely having TMJ problems. if that's not the case, you should see a doctor. well, you should see a doctor anyways. when you're hurting, your body is trying to tell you something, and ignoring it is never a good thing.

I get the exact same thing, Jeff! I think it's like a kind of cramp or something, probably from forcing my chin against my neck too hard, the way I get rid of the pain is to quickly massage the underside of my chin (where the pain is concentrated the most) and hope that it goes away. But you're right, it's fucking horrible.

umm i dunno.. cause the pains only short term i can only imagine its cramp?

I get that, had it for years when I yawn too wide. I just avoid opening my mouth too wide.

Which is hard in my line of work...

I figured it was normal, don't let it stay though, close your mouth immediately and it goes quicker.

I've had that exact same problem where my muscle feels like its swelling if I have had my mouth really wide open for too long. It hasnt happened to me for agers now though but when it did I used to close my mouth fast and kinda push the muscle back to where it should be. Worked for me!
