So at the moment I'm using a cheap branded Fender knock-off. Soon I will be in a band with some friends so I am going to need to upgrade. I have a spending limit of £300 GBP - around $550? and I want something decent. I also don't want people telling me, oh save up a bit more and buy something much, please .

Check out the Peavy Millenium series 5 string. about $250 US (I think). I've played a few, and they sound pretty dynamic. Plus you'd have extra cash for accessories.

Thanks for the suggestion, it'd be nice to have some spare cash for maybe a better amp etc.

Oh btw I was looking in the Fender range and was wondering if there are any within my price range that are any good.

what kind of music do/will you play?...do you have a decent amp to play with the band?

Anyways, at that price range you should look into some Fender Standard P or J Basses , Schecter Stilleto Custom , Ibanez SR500 or SRX500, Warwick Rockbass Corvette or Streamer , G&L L-2000 , etc...I'll think of more later...And I'll post links if you want...All those will run you about 500 USD, but there are some good less expensive basses that I can recommend so you'd have money left over for a good amp to play with a full band and be heard over drums/guitars/etc...

<EDIT> I posted the links, just click on the bass and the link will come up.

We will be playing indie/rock, and I will probably have to dish out for a new amp aswell. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming, also if you could get links I'd be grateful.

Ok, I posted the links, they're in my previous post....

And if you want I'll name a few less expensive basses and maybe an amp or two...

I suggest getting a good amp and a decent bass as opposed to getting a good bass and a decent amp...In a band situation you will a lot of power (usually at least 100 watts) and it would help if the amp was a reliable one with a pretty good tone to boot (i.e. not a $50 crate or Behringer)...Let me know..

Also, where do you live?...(So i can know which websites can/will deliver to you)

I live in the UK, and I would prefer to get a decent bass and a good amp, as long as the bass is still playable at gigs etc. And many thanks for posting the links.

man, I've played the sr500, and it's goddamn awesome, and I'm sure the fiver has the same vibe.

no problem ...and if you are ok with the good amp decent bass setup, I guess I'll mention a few good basses....

Some good cheaper basses would be...the Peavey Millenium like the first guy said, an OLP would be nice too...I think those would be good because you should have about $300 for an amp...

And if you dont mind shopping online and not trying before you buy, take a look at rondomusic.net they have some good basses...And they're very cheap...They ship to the UK for about 50-70 pounds/euros (sorry I really have no idea what the currency is over there )...Here are some good ones..

These basses have received great reviews from guys on this site and Talkbass.com, which is a forum dedicated to everything about electric bass, double bass, amps, etc...And most of the guys over there that have commented on these mention that they are a tremendous value for their small price...Most of them are experienced bassists/musicians who own basses and amps that cost well over 800 USD...

just another option...

here are some good amps too...

Get a Standard Fender Jazz Bass and change the pickups to seymour duncans or dimarzios. It will sound better than an american you have my word.

It doesn't have s-1 switchign though.
