use your fingers - mark knopfler never used a pick,
neck pick-up
lots of bass

that works for me with both my strat and viper

He also used a wah pedal in a mid position, that helps to get that peaky filtered tone. Think he used his Les Paul for that song, but any guitar with humbuckers should be able to get you quite close

Sounds like he used a Rangemaster or some kinda booster.
