System of a Down...then some indie song...then weezer at a show. Wtf. You can't turn distortion to full and drop metal riffs with System than play some girly sounding music. It's just wtf. Metallica can't be at a concert and play one Metallica song then say...ok for the rest we're gonna experiment with some of our favorite emo songs. It just doesn't work that way. The song progression and sound would be royally ****ed. It just doesn't work! Ya I'm pretty frustrated right now...I'm usually passive but with my band I'm an absolute control freak...dammit.

My idea is to start our set with a jam in Bminor then out of nowhere we go into Hotel California. Keep in mind the audience is going to consist of a lot of old people from kentucky. Eeeeverybody knows that song and the riff...that would get us credibility instantly...plus, It's an AMAZING song.

I know I'm all about me, me, me and **** I guess, but honestly, What would you prefer. Amazing ambient music filled with original solos and sounds the whole show or a ****load of covers from random bands with way different styles.

You need to mix your originals with covers my friend.. something new for the crowd and somethin the crowd knows and loves, you know?

Many famous bands started out like this and it's how they progressed to stardom.. take the Rolling Stones: they have tons of songs that people think were originals; but the band actually just put a rock twist on old classic blues songs..

So take some popular tunes and add a bit of your own twist to them if you want.. and add a couple to your set list along with your originals.

Yea i think ur idea is much better. Who doesn't love Hotel California? and yes it is a good idea to stick to one type of music during a concert. It gives u a kind of identity as a band, and not just a band that likes to go up and play random covers.

In the Immortal words of Johnny Rotten "The minute someone says you can't do something, YES YOU CAN."

dont play someone else's music because your audience isn't into what you write.

^Yes but there are life's little "rules" that are better to follow than to ignore... you gotta play to your audience. The best bands do this, and yes, they do play what they like but it's also shifted towards their audience. I don't go to England and play death metal; I'll play what we play and then add in a nice Cream song.
Looking for my India/Django.

your idea sounds pretty good, just make sure not to do the ambient improv solos as your only piece of original material.

Ya I agree with that. Technically SOAD is nu-metal. But they do tune down and play heavy sounding riffs.

I'm just saying that SOAD, Weezer, Indie...those are 3 completely different guitar tones.

And yes we plan to do many original songs. We have amazing instrumentals (not just traditional guitar solos and we have a keyboard player that helps us create an original sound).

Our biggest inspiration is the Dark Side of the Moon if that gives you an idea and we love using the whole natural minor scale. We don't use the pentatonic often so it gives us a very original epic sound.

Do that. Sounds perfect. Be a control freak or whatever, but it will sound 1000 times better.

It's all about auidence too, like i love tons of different music so that would sound cool to me, but unless you have a fantastic singer, i doubt he can stretch his range that much, i could be wrong though. I just don't picture a bunch of old kentucky men going crazy when you rip into "Violent Pornography". Thats just me though

So everyone in England is a Cream fan? CoF, for example, came from England...

Anyway, I have to say your idea sounds better for getting you guys a nice reception, but if you're a band be democratic - throw in a System song near the end of the set, or something.

Indie isnt girly. asshole

perhaps you could possibly contribute to the thread and offer some advice rather than being a dick because somebody has a different opinion than you

it's good to have original songs and such, but it's also effective to play a cover to get the crowd involved, possibly one with some crowd chants or something...

redwings once again knows whats up, you gotta play songs you like that your crowd will like too, if you're playing to a kentucky crowd maybe play 'spiders' all acoustic, or 'lonliest day' and a weezer song that would compliment the hotel california and all of these together, throw some styles around in all these songs to give them a new fresh sound while still remaining true to the song, pick out some songs that you can arrange to capture the overall feeling without losing the musical emphasis, like find some songs that can be arranged to be a bit more acoustic and bluesy/country/classical feeling if you're going for the hotel california ala pink floyd sound. i karaoke ALL the time and the one thing i learned is that if you want people to appreciate what yer doing you gotta sing for them not to them, when theres a bunch of rednecks i'll sing some kid rock and pink floyd, if theres some younger kids in there then i'll do some drowning pool and system of a down and pantera..... don't patronize them with what you're doing either, just make sure your crowd can relate to what you're doing and in the end you'd prolly be surprised at how many older rednecks can get down w/ some thrashing metal!!

first off soad is weakass**** not heavy metal, and dont butcher hotel california. i like variety but your brother is a little confused...
