i'm looking at getting an audio interface that's 500 or less. does any have recommendations and maybe sound clips of particular interfaces? any advice on what else to get along with mics and an audio interface would be great too.

Well it depends on how many things you want to record at once. Firewire seems to be the favourite way to go these days.

the Presonus Firepod looks damn good but its $600, 8 XLR inputs with phantom power for each of them, you can select between instrumenet level and line level too

for only $300 theres the Maudio Firewire 410, 2 XLR inputs and 2 balanced 1/4" inputs
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOFW410
and Maudio has got a sligthly fancies one with some more inputs and some digital inputs/outputs too http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOFW1814

and this Mark of The Unicorn seems pretty good too, as they are known for quality gear
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MTUULTRALITE/view--Front+and+Back
2 XLR inputs with phantom power and 6 more regular balanced line level inputs

all of these run at 24bit and 96khz to what I can see which is should be enough to get some good recording quality

what else to get besides the interface and mics? cables and mic stands, possibbly a pop filter for vocals

if you can spend $500 get an M-Box, it comes with a light (but highly functional) version of pro tools, and is a very high quality interface for the price with a good built in mic pre amp.

I'd go with the firepod. Great interface, I've only heard good things. The preamps are supposed to be incredible too.

well i don't have a rack or anything, but i suppose that doesn't really matter at all. it's also 600 which is a bit much. i said 500 and that was even pushing it, so we'll see. i don't need all those mic plugins either, but i suppose it could be good for later when i could need them. any other ideas? i was thinking this one:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-FireWire-1814-Computer-Recording-Interface?sku=709201

but someone said they're not that great of quality, not as in sound-wise, but that his school had some and they all broke. i don't know about that though. seems pretty odd.
