its a locking nut, its for guitars with a floyd rose style bridge. it locks down the strings so that they stay in tune when being whammyed. they work in combination with the floyd, which also locks the strings.

Custom Strat
Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace
Fulltone OCD
Electro Harmonix Small Clone Chorus
Dunlop Crybaby Classic
MXR EVH-117 Flanger

so you tune it once and you lock it and it stays tuned for ever or do you have to tune it a couple of times?

what's whammyed?

You'll have to re-tune at some point

They are harder to restring because of the FR but worth the hassle because they stay in tune much longer

Being whammied-when you use the whammy bar to do dive bombs and stuff

unless u have a ****ty FR, in which case it goes out of tune by simple wammy manuvers......also when u have a locking nut there's always fine tuners located on the FR bridge so you dont have to unlock it every time u tune up

Shredhead's advice is the best in the thread.
