Chromatics! Chromatics! Chromatics!

e-----------------------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-------
b----------------------------------------------1-2-3-4--------------------
g----------------------------------1-2-3-4--------------------------------
d----------------------1-2-3-4--------------------------------------------
a------------1-2-3-4------------------------------------------------------
E--1-2-3-4----------------------------------------------------------------

You can also mix it up, instead of doing 1-2-3-4, try 1-3-2-4 and other things. Try to incorporate your pinky into your everday playing. Play barre chords, those make you use your pinky as well.

Check this one out.
I practice this daily for about ten minutes with the rest of my practice.

e--8-5-7-8-10-7-8-10-12-8-10-12-13-10-12-13-15-12-13-15-17-13-15-17-19-15-17-19

descending:

e--19-17-15-13-17-15-13-12-15-13-12-10-13-12-10-8-12-10-8-7-10-8-7-5

That helps your accuracy with your pinky, particularly the ascending part. Try it.

Also, if you listen to Megadeth, the beginning chromatic run in the solo to Sweating Bullets is a good exercise

a good way to strengthen specifically your pinky using that exercise is to do this

e---------------------------------------------------------4--1-2-3--------
b--------------------------------------------4--1-2-3---------------------
g--------------------------------4--1-2-3---------------------------------
d--------------------4--1-2-3---------------------------------------------
a----------4--1-2-3-------------------------------------------------------
E--1-2-3-----------------------------------------------------------------

you can do that with any of your fingers, it isolates your finger so you're forced to develop dexterity and strengthen it

Use this daily, helps a lot. ^ Tell me if that is a bad link.

Also, when doing chromatics, be sure to skip strings and use many combinations of fingers!

trust me, if you don't use your pinky there will come a day when you will want to and won't be able to. s yes, it will come back to bite you in the ass

Pantera solos dude. Cemetery Gates and Domination helped me with it. Try doign this legato over and over again.
E-------------9-10-12-10-9-------------
B---9-10-12-----------------12-10-9---

over and over again, hammered on and pulled off.

really, probably the reason for this pinky problem is because the scale i run the most is the pentatonic minor (well, sort of a pentatonic minor, a little different) it looks like this:
e-------------------------------------------1-3-4---
b-----------------------------------1-3-4-----------
g---------------------------1-2-3-------------------
d-------------------1-2-3---------------------------
a-----------1-2-3-----------------------------------
E---1-3-4-------------------------------------------

see only three notes per string, and so i only use my first three fingers! terrible habit to have gotten into!

does any1 have some sort of rock/blues scale that has 4 notes per string that i can incorporate into my daily playing (not practice)?

D----------------------------2-4-1-3-------------------------

This is a great exercise for building up left hand dexterity. My teacher gave me a whole bunch of these, helped me a lot.

Uh... there aren't really scales with 4 notes per string, I mean, you could make one have 4 notes per string but you'd be linking several patterns together.

Other than that, use the Major scale and its modes.

^ not true, chromatic.... and depending on how you use the scale and how far you can stretch your finger most scales have at LEAST 4 notes per string.
