ok let's say you start a major pent. scale from C on the G string, would the tab look like this?:
e|----------2-4------------------------------------------------
B|-----2-4-----------------------------------------------------
G|---5--------------------------------------------------------

or

e|-------------3--6----------------------------------------------
B|------3--6------------------------------------------------------
G|---5-----------------------------------------------------------

|--|xx|--|xx|--|
|--|xx|--|xx|--|
|xx|--|xx|--|--|
|xx|--|--|xx|--|
|xx|--|--|xx|--|
|--|xx|--|xx|--|

reds = root

best way is to figure it out

Yes. That is a G major pentatonic.

There are 5 different shapes of a pentatonic scale :

| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | xx | -- | -- |
| xx | -- | xx | -- | -- |
| xx | -- | xx | -- | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |

| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | xx | -- | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx| -- | xx | -- |

| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | -- | xx |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |

| -- | xx | -- | -- | xx |
| -- | -- | xx | -- | xx |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | -- | xx |
| -- | xx | -- | -- | xx |

| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| xx | -- | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |
| -- | xx | -- | xx | -- |

So if you wanted a C on a G string, there are many different combinations. These ^ are just a reference guide.

EDIT: sorry for the messed up boxes, when I typed them up they were in a perfect line but it messed them up when i posted, if you need a better example you could always search this site for lessons on pentatonic scales or you could ask the all-knowing Google!

Fixed! The bold notes are the roots for major pentatonic.

Well there are the modes of the major pentatonic!

Every scale has as many modes as there are individual notes in the scale.

Probably the most "correct" way of stating it is: there is a pentatonic scale
composed of the 1 2 3 5 & 6 degrees of the diatonic scale. One of those modes
is called the Major Pentatonic (starting on 1), and one of those modes is called
the Minor Pentatonic (starting on the 6).

So say i start on the 2nd degree of A C D E G for example

Im playing Phyrgian Minor Pentatonic ?
I'll just do everything for each note:

A-Regular minor pentatonic that we all know.
C-Regular major pentatonic that we all should know.
D-The scale contains no third (1 2 4 5 7), so it could be used anywhere there is a b7 chord.
E-The scale contains no fifth (1 b3 4 b6 7), so it could be used over Em or Em7b5 chords.
G-This scale contains no third, (1 2 4 5 6), so it could be used over G major or G minor chords.

Don't try to give them names. Actually, don't really even think about modes of the pentatonic. They lack the notes that give modal sounds.
