a 50w tube amp should be fine for pretty much anything but huge crowds... in which you might use a PA system anyway. However a 50w tube amp will break up earlier so if you want lots and lots of headroom the 100w is the way to go, otherwise go 50. Now if its solid state... that's really just a question of how many neighbors you want to piss off.

50w should be fine for most any gig, unless its a huge gig. Which amp are you looking at?

edit: ahh... saw the post above me

If you're looking for ideas for amps for Green Day or similar music a Vox or Marshall should be pretty good. It's not really my type of music so i don't know too much detail.

^Actually tube amps do break up, but that's why they sound good at high volumes. It's a pleasent-sounding breakup.

Would you do it?

What would you do?

I'd say 50 Watts tube (In most cases)

or 100watts Solid State

I think you've got tube and SS mixed up.

^^ Yea I'm just talking about if he wants to play clean at high volumes.
^ He'll be heard if he gets a good 50w amp. My amp is 55w and i can be heard without even massively cranking the volume. Then again its a Mesa so it's loud to begin with.

I meant that if the amp is solid state... the 50w or 100w is really just a question of volume. But with tube amps you also have the breaking up at high volumes which might not be desireable if he wants nice clean sounds at high volumes.

Yeah, but 50w SS isn't gonna piss off any neighbors

Well 100 watts will be good over a 50, tube or SS. But if you buy a 50 watt tube, the 50 watt tube will sound like a 100 solidstate. But 100 is good because you have enough for bigger gigs, and you can turn it down a little for smaller gigs.
