So, you pick up a guitar, could be anywhere, its plugged in and seriously cranked. What little lick or flourish do you play to show your skills?

I thought this earlier and I realised I dont really have a little power lick or something I can whip out to show off really quickly - maybe the second section of eruption (the power bends and the speed picking block), or maybe that awesome little rock riff in No Boundaries towards the end.

What would/do you play? No suggestions like Sweet Child please, that wouldnt look cool in the slightest (maybe to chicks, but what do they know ), im talking awesome face melting stuff.

And If this has been done before, big deal. So have 99% of the threads on here, less of the negativity!

If its your own lick feel free to post a tab!

i really dont ususally pick up a guitar to soley show my skills.. but in the ocassion i do pick up a guitar that i dont own i.e. trying out at guitar center i just usually run a bunch of scales and then some ocatave displacement stuff.. most people tend to trip over that seeing how to my best guess 88% of the people who shop and WORK at Guitar Center are complete noobs and only been playing anywhere between 6 months and 2 years..

^ thats true talk of someone who likes to show off.. blasting out something quickly doesnt always mean its going to sound good.. when i play a guitar i play it for purpose.. not to just blast out some random ****.. the only time im showing off is when im onstage..

I'm not really a showoff... It feels so pathetic trying to squeese as many nps i can into some solo as i can. I enjoy playing stuff that other people appreciate listening to.

I've only been playing for 10 months, but I'm not some ignorant "noob" in a music store who trips over scales. Granted, you'd probably outplay me anyday, but when I play in music stores, the same happens. I was just playing some simple scales and chords and people were like "WOW OMGZZ!!"

I've never really showed off in front of people, although in that music store a bunch of goths were listening to me play master of puppets and they were all singing to it.

i play the pentatonic scale. Like most people, but ffs, what is with people who ask this. So you find a cranked guitar, do you *have* to show off? No. If its in a store you want to discover its tonal capabilities and if you're in front of your mates then they wont care unless they're very shallow.
come on dude, learn to appreciate music

(oh and yes, incase you were to busy showing off with a 'seriously cranked' guitar, that was me being negative)

The other day at my local shop I saw thsi kid I knew from public school and he was trying out a guitar playing metallica riffs. I always just found it really dumb just to learn riffs, like, I thought about it and I really don't know that many or even a full song. I'd rather just learn the techniques, the theory and become proficient with that stuff and then just write my own ****.

I geuss the ending section of Mordecai by BTBAM or the outro to Floods by Pantera sound cool.

Well done, feel relieved now? Rise to the bait why dont you, hook line and sinker

I like how you have managed to deduce that I must not appreciate music because I sometimes like to play something I enjoy? And oh, god forbid something other people might like aswell? I never mentioned once that you *have* to show off, anyone who does so is an idiot.

Maybe you should try posting some vaguely relevant or constructive instead of taking the opportunity to increase your virtual ego.

Thats a different (and much easier) way to show off. Most girls are impressed at a few notes and chords, not that I'm complaining...

thats exactly what I did, and fun it was. And dont pretend you made this thread to try and make people do that, cos you didn't. And I seem to remember you mentioning something about playing Eruption, which, if I am not very much mistaken, is classed as showing off, both when you play it, and by making a thread essentially just to tell people that you can play it.

And how on earth can this thread be constructive???? If you are trying to suggest that I am not constructive most of the rest of the time, ask anyone else who goes on this forum quite a lot and they should tell you otherwise.

"Sometimes like to play something I enjoy", come on. You are just trying to make me elevate my obivous virtual ego enough that I feel ready to give you a virtual whack on the nose. Threadstarters should be diplomatic

oh, and just in case anyone was wondering, my favourite standalone showoff lick is this one from a song with Joe Satriani and Andy Timmons (search for that on yahoo video to find the song) and its basically the first thing Satch plays.

(I know, don't say anything)

Most of the time I'm trying to play to impress, I either whip out Steve Vai's 'Building the Church' or Eruption, all of which is easy. Neither of them are really hard, but they impress the **** out of newbies and people who don't play.

EDIT - On the acoustic, I either fingerpick 'Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You' or play 'Oh Well' by Fleetwood Mac.

when i first pick up a guitar at GC or somewhere i just thrown down a few random licks off the blues scale, just to warm up a little, like the sort of licks you'd end a song with. then i go into playing covers and stuff, along with some SRV-style blues improv, and maybe a little pentatonic improv as well
