I have about $500 to spend on a new amp and I want to get a marshall I'm looking at either a 100dfx or an avt50 I've heard good and bad things about both. I play an epiphone les paul custom and am looking for a zakk wylde tone. Any suggestions would help but plaese do not tell me they suck tell me why they suck.
#3
NO NO NO! The MG has really sterile thin distortion, and the AVT isnt much better! Save up for a JCM900 or plexi, or if you really want a new amp. look into some other brand. Low end marshalls are horrible!

ive got a avt and it amazing i know every one says it sucks its no the best on its own but which my effect pedal its sound f***in amazing
#12
If you want to get an MG, dont go bigger than 30watts. And with AVT, I only like AVT100 and AVT150, those are not too bad, personally I like them.
However if you are capable of saving up some 1000 bucks, get a good tube marshall. If you cant save up enough, get a smaller tube amp or ... nevermind. I dont need to be flamed
#13
I'm not an idiot I'm asking, but thanx for letting me know what is a better amp in my price range then
#14
I agree. Low end Marshalls are crap. Get a peavey, Randall, or maybe a crate. I have a Roland micro cube and like it alot. I'm getting a new amp to becasue the cube is to weak.

Well done you stupid man, give someone bad advice.

Have you even played a tube amp, no, otherwise you would NEVER suggest this amp!
#16
you have a bad spelling of setup in your sig.

look into traynors, pignoses, or laney lc15, or save up for lc30. Dont be fooled by the low wattage. They are beasts. With the LC15 you can get a tubescreamer or a MXR zakk wylde overdrive and that should be good
#17
Ebay is your friend. get something all tube

Great if you want to play classic/hard rock.

this thread is so full of ****, i should report it.

half of you guys are just blurting out worth less crap. "zOmG t3h em gee is t3h suxxorz lyke a box wif beez n it! uR a n00b n shud die cuz u ddnt knoe."

shut up. can nobody post some sence and explain why the dislike the mg or avt?

the mg just isn't a good amp. the clean is pretty bland and life-less, while the distortion channel tries to be overly metal while retaining classic marshall characteristics at the same time. so the end result is a buzzy box of ear pericing ice picks.

avt isn't that bad, but for what marshall charge for it you can get much better all tube amps. overall though, the amp seems to lack life in general.

now, judging by your name, *nirvana*, i'm assuming you like more mainstream styles of rock, so for about $500 you could probably afford a good used jcm 800 or 900 combo.

OKAY Lesson 1 - The ONLY way Zakk gets his sound is the synergistic combination of 2 distortions... Preamp AND Power amp distortion.

The MG is fine for a bedroom practice amp but your average joe off the street will be able to tell the difference in sound between what you sound like and what Zakk sounds like. To me that is unnacceptible. I KNOW that musicians will split hairs over the perfect sound but if an average non guitar playing person like your sister or girlfriend can tell the difference you should get another amp.

If you don't beleive me all you need to do is play the MG, and then immediately after you play a riff with it, move to a tubed Marshall like the JCM 800 or 900 or DSL. Play the same riff with the amp turned up... You will be able to tell the difference.

So it is not really that the MG is bad but it is thinner distortion, it isn't responsive to guitar volume, and it won't get you to sound like Zakk.

Now the AVT is a little better because it is a little warmer but it still doesn't crunch as heavy or cut as much as the real deal.

Just a word of warning though... If you are playing at bedroom volumes then AVT is at least going to get closer to what a cranked JCM 800 would sound like with its master volume turned down. WHY? Because if you have to turn the JCM 800 master volume down you are only hearing preamp distortion which the AVT can get close to. Both amps (when played at softer volumes) are going to sound kindof fuzzy because that is what an overdriven modern marshall preamp sounds like. Now, the AVT still won't get exactly like the JCM 800 because the AVT is using a clipping diode in its circuitry to create distortion. All that means is that the amp designers at marshall have decided to put their Guv'nor pedal inside the marshall AVT to create distortion instead of letting a vacuum tube distort the signal.

If you want what I would do if I wanted to get Zakk distortion with 500 to spend on an amp... easy get a marshall jcm 800 combo model 4210. A 50 watt marshall combo
I will also say though that the EMGs are important for the clarity and cut Zakk can get through his cranked marshall. Remember that you won't have a clean sound - it is gonna be pretty lifeless but you will get the crunch and sizzle you want.

Good Luck

No kidding. the XXX is a good one...but would it give him that ZW tone?

[edit] its good to be back huh tuba.
#32
it is good to be back.

and the XXX could give him a ZW tone. with my JSX, i turn the resonance up, and treble down, neck pup, and i get a nice ZW sound. pinches are crazy. so you may have to do the same to thge XXX, maybe less so

Yeah you cant have a ZW tone without pinch harmonics every other note.
And for 500 you might be able to find maybe a JCM900 and boost it?

from when you posted that to when you read this, you could have googled that

look into traynor like they said, but if you DO want a marshall for $500 or under, look into an older valvestate. no avt this or that, but something like a vs100.

personally id save up a bit more and get a jcm off ebay.

#39
do u know where I can find some audio clips of the peavey, marshall, or traynor?

if you want to sound like zakk wylde you need the jcm800 100watt head with the 4x12 cabs. EMG 81 and 85 pickups. a dunlop rotovibe pedal. dunlop jimi hendrix wah pedal. a boss ch-1 super chorus. and a boss sd-1 super overdrive
