It's the scale length of a guitar - the distance between the bone nut or zero fret and the bridges saddle.

The measurment normally determines things like placement of frets for proper intonation,string tension, tone & tuning stability.

25-1/2'' would be the scale length of a Fender Stratocaster or a Fender Telecaster, for example where as the scale length of a Gibson Les Paul is 24-3/4''

The measurments are in inches.
