Hullo all...

Well I am planning on getting a new bass and have narrowed down the long list to two basses that I would really love to have but don't have the funds for both... anyways here they are

1. Rickenbacker 4003

http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=4003

2. Fender Jaco Pastorius Fretless Jazz

Rock and Jaco stuff... i guess you could classify that as Jazz I play alot of Rush stuff and i dunno how that would turn out on a fretless

unless you are an advanced orchestra student, i do not recommend a fretless.
now, having said that, the Rickenbacker is probably the finest built bass in the production market. they are incredible, but their sound is very unique. in other words a Ric will always sound like a Ric. that is the main reason why, the Ric is not more popular in mainstream music. i am a Fender Jazz player. i play a 3 color burst Jazz(mia), with the pick-guard removed (Jaco-like). it has frets, and i'm very happy with it.
i recommend a fretted Jazz. the Getty Lee is also an excellent choice.

i cant belive im voting against a fender here. wow. but im gonna have to go with the rickenbacker, they are amazing basses. they're beautiful too.

If you're a more rock-oriented person (be it classic rock, metal, prog, punk, whatever), definately the Rickenbacker. If you play jazz or have some special plans of your own, consider the Jaco.
#11
I am not a fan of the Rick sound so i would get the jaco bass...

Seems like you're a big fan of the Ricky, makes no sense not to follow your dream. And really, a lot of us don't need/aren't ready for that expensive of a fretless to REALLY REALLY devote that much money into it... but if you are and can make it work, all the best brother.

Since your screename is already "Ric4003" you might as well get the Ric... unless your name is Rick, and you happened to just throw on 4003 for the hell of it.
#17
You obviously want the rickenbacker so why even ask? All our advice is going to do is make you second guess what you want. They're both amazing basses so it really doesn't matter but get what you want.
#18
Get the Rickenbacker, Its your damn username. So its obvious you have wanted one for a certain amount of time.

Besides. Jaco Bass is firewood.

If a basic, Canadian pine log is a Fender Standard,
A Canadian Grade-A pine log is Fender American,
then Jaco Pastorius bass is just like Canadian Grade-A log bathed in kerosine for easy ignition.

OR!

If you drive with you headlights on during the day is a Standard Jazz Bass
and if you DO drive with your headlights during the day is a Jaco Jazz bass - then you *STILL* drive with your frickin headlight on during the day!

Or

if "about" is a Standard Jazz bass
and "ab00t" is a Jaco jazz bass,
then you still have the same meaning, only it sounds different.

or:

If a Std. Jazz bass is a maple leaf
and a Jaco Jazz bass is Toronto,
you still get the same friggin team.

Go Canada. Get the ric.

I wasnt really impressed with the jaco (but i'm big on fender) save yourself the $$ and run a scratchguard-less fretless Fender Standard (440 dollars) over with your dads pick up truck. Hey presto!

Go Ric, or get one of the nicer American series Jazzs, in my opnion.

Indiemetalhead, it's just a calambur. I'm outlying canadian stereotipes in form of a math problem)))) Canadians drive with their lights on during daytime, they chop wood, the say "ab00t", and "h00se", and Toronto Maple Leafs used to be my fav hockey team
