I like the Ibanex PH7 PHat-Hed. Get some cool distortion tones out of that one. Also it has a cool Attack function that lets you get a cool Fieldy(Korn) signature tone. I've had fun with it.

Ibanez PD7 Phat Hed - 50 dollars new
EHX Russian Big Muff - 60ish dollars new (Very fuzzy sound)
EHX Little Big Muff - 70ish new (Kinda a mix of USA & Russian, more USA though)
EHX USA Big Muff - 80ish new (More overidriver clear fuzz)
EHX Metal Muff - 100ish new, flat out distortion, sounds killer, made for metal players who take solos, your basic distortion is just a layer of heavy contourable distortion, and it comes w/ the amazing top boost function, which just adds a lot of treble great for solos.
Tech Sansamp Tri A.C. - 150ish, cool distortion.
Aphex Bass Driver - I've heard good things. Around 80ish IIRC.
Fulltone Bass Driver - Heard lots of good things, somehwere between 150 and 220.

no problem.

Distortion is a fun game.

Just one suggestion... stay away from multi effects pedals, and stay away from the Boss ODB-3.

My 2 cents.

Digitech has a line of bass pedals.
i*[∂/∂t]*Ψt = -[∇^2]/2*(Ψt) (unitless form)

i tried one once, my guess is that you better stay away from them unless you want to spend some serious $$$
the cheaper things i tried (don't remember what model) sounded really thin and had a serious delay when activating an effect

edit: also, those multi-effects are completely digital, and in my oppinion analog is the only way to go (with some exeptions of course)

I personally like the Boss ODB-3 people slate it but for me it's worked great, however. I find it's only good when used with a noise surpressor, but I still reccomend you try it.

ive played with the boss bass overdrive, i like clean better, but every once and a while i feel the need to play "around the world" by rhcp so it works

one of my bass player friends likes it too

boss is typically a safe choice

They give you 60 different pedals that don't give you the true sound of any of the ones they try to modulate.

For my passive bass I go drive max, lows about 6 treble about 4 and level about 5 set to dist and no attack, for active basses I run drive max lows 0 treble maxed and level maxed. Both work pretty well.
