I'm finally going to buy a new guitar. I recently bought a VOX ad50vt, which I use together with my crappy stratcopy, and now I want to buy a new guitar.

I play Iron Maiden alot so it should suit that kind of music, I guess it's heavy metal. It has to have a nice clean sound aswell. I'll probably spend around 550 USD on the guitar by the way.

well all maiden guitarists use fender american strats, although dave/janick have hotrails installed. adrian uses LPs, SGs, explorers, strats, jacksons and a bunch of other stuff too.

maybe get a fender mexi strat and replace pickups? hotrails or lace sensors maybe

I think that Adrian uses DiMarzio Super Distortion-pickups. I think I've read that somewhere, correct me if I'm wrong.
#5
Well if you like Iron Maiden, It would probably suit you to get a Strat and swap out the pups.

What strat would you recommend?
#9
A Fat Strat would be fine, as would any alder body with humbuckers. I'm pretty sure Fender makes a signature model...
It's a fine line between clever and stupid.
#10
Are there any cheaper options? It does'nt have to sound just lika Iron Maiden, it should mostly be able to handle their kind of music and sound good of course.

Like I said, I have around 550 USD to spend. So buying a Fender and replacing the pickups is'nt maybe the way to go.
#11
Get a fender mexican made fat strat, tey are probably in your price range, when you have the money for a pick-up change, change the humbucker, then in time the singles to hotrails
#12
Try finding a used Jackson DK2, although you'd need to swap out the single coils.

yeah. get a dk2 dinky. just as versatile as a strat.

Get a CIJ/MIJ Fender Strat from Ishibashi.
The cheapest one goes for about $300. (I think you have to mail order it though for outside of japan.)
Or you could get one from here.

It doesn't work out so cheap but it's easier.
IMO they're better than the mexicans, but it is basswood. So it's a bit more mellow.
You'd have plenty of money left to swap pups.
Japaneese fenders are secks.

if you want the real maiden sound, you would need strat with s/s/s and hotrails imo

maybe this

Well not if you want that classic Maiden sound. Then it's Strat with a full size humbucker (think it was Super Distortion).

An Ibanez Rg would work very well for Iron Maiden!

Fender do actually make an Iron Maiden Strat model. Probably too pricey though. As well as hotrails, they have locking trems (Floyd Roses, I think) installed on their Strats.

How would Ibanez-guitars work?

I think an S470 would be good for maiden stuff. Because you get a good locking trem, with maiden uses quite a bit, and its got HSH configuration which is what a lot of Adrians strats are. In time you would need a pickup change tho.

Most of their strats are modded with FRs. But a vintage trem would work good enough for what they do.

i say no to ibanez, IMO you should get an Alder body guitar for a maiden sound, go for a strat or a SSH dinky
#27
Get a Les Paul, some kid I was hanging out with today at Guitar Center asked the luthier and the one of the salespeople what guitar would they use for a Maiden sound....they both said Les Pauls.

I've actually thought of asking about that guitar. I hav'nt tried it though.

I have to make one thing clear. Guitars are much more expensive in sweden. If you want to buy a Standard Fat Strat here you'll have to pay around 740$, which is way over my budget. And I'm not kidding!

Hm.. Depends on whose sound one wants, and if he/she wants studio or live. Adrian still use a Les Paul Goldtop he bought when he was 17 in the studio, but live Strats are his mainguitar nowadays, as with Janick and Davey. Adrians main livepup is a Superdist in bridge position, and I'm not sure that I've ever seen Janick use a guitar with a humbucker..

I think Dave uses a Superdist from time to time, not always though.. So, the ultimate in getting a livesound like Maiden have (atleast when it comes to guitars) , is a Fender Stratocaster, either with SD Superdist at bridge and singlecoils at neck and middle (Superdist used exclusively), Seymour Duncan JB Junior at bridge, middle and neck (Janick) or Hotrails all over(Davey) , Floyd Rose tremolosystem (Adrian and Dave) or some sort of vintage trem (Janick).

Dunno if you can make much sense out of that... Sorry if you can't .

I would go with a DK2 I have one and a Vox AD30VT and I can get a good Maiden sound. The stock pickpups aren't that bad either.
SPAM
Stock Gibson Pickups from a 2005 V, I think they're a 498T and 500T set FS/FT
Duncan Distortion (regular spaced) FS

I think a fat strat or an RG would be perfect! I mean any guitar with a s/s/h would be great.

I just want to thank everyone for all the answers. I have one idea that I want to ask you guys about though.

Since I won't be able to buy a Fender Fat Strat, because my budget won't allow it, I want to ask you about one idea that I got.

What about buying an Ibanez rg321 and replace the pickups? I've heard some good things about it and it's rather cheap. I hope that it's not too cheap though.

Is this just a stupid idea? Should I save up for something else?
#34
well actually fender standard fat ( hss ) strats go for 400 usd, and then you have the money to change the pick up i personally go for that...

actually i am going for that!!

Whats funny is people saying getting a guitar with an alder body when the iron maiden strats used to have basswood. Any guitar with a humbucker in the bridge will do imo.

It would be great if I could get one that cheap. But that's not going to happen since guitars cost MUCH more in Sweden, and that's were I live.

Are you sure that you want to know how much a HSS Standard Strat cost i Sweden? Ok then, you'll have to pay a whipping 740$, if you want a brand new. A Mexican is a little cheaper, it'll cost you 650$.
#37
Aye, an Ibanez RG321MH + new pups would be pretty good. Go for it
#38
Well, it depends what period of Maiden you want to sound like, I mean, for example, Dave used a SG for the Piece of Mind album, so you could get an Epi for that price and some pickups, but it all depends on what you want. The best advice I can give you is try out the guitars recommended here and see what suits you best.

I don't know I want to sound like any specific period. I'm happy as long as it sounds like something that they've made.
