when making a neck from scratch, what should i use as a guide when carving the shape of the neck contour?

You don't argue with tubadude on Washburn-related matters, he flosses with the G string from a set of 0.12's y'know....and it's WOUND!

thats a cool idea but what i meant was is there a way to use some kind of template while carving in order to check if the shape is right.

Get a rough shape in first by removing the extra wood, using either a rasp or a plane. Then you can sand it to "near-perfection"

I'd suggest you go to a guitar store and figure out what neck thickness you want.
