Maple and Mahogany are most common, any hard wood is good really, or a combination of two or 3 laminated together.

yea maple. I personally like mahogany necks. my PRS has a finished mahogany neck and it feels great. I can polish it with guitar polish and it cleans it smooth so it feels brand new and very sleek. My Godin has a Maple neck which isnt finished, but laminated I think. It feels ok but not as good as a finished mahogany
