hey i have been upstroking when i play lead.......i almost cant even downstroke when i play it sounds good when i up stroke so i didnt know if i needed to change this when i play or if it doesnt even matter

Well it's good that you're practicing upstrokes because most players struggle with them. And yes I've heard upstrokes give a little better sound. If you want to become better however, you need too do both. It seems like you're getting the hang of upstrokes so when you go to do alternate or economy picking it should come pretty easy.
