i just saw the flaming lips in concert and my friend described them as math rock.the way he explained it is that it just has different timings (12/8 etc.) and things like that.could someone here please elaborate on this?any responses are appretiated. thanks in advance.

Flaming Lips aren't math rock.

Slint, June of 44, and Gastr del Sol are math rock.

Good genre. To describe, I'd say its like the Flaming lips but paced slower and not as poppy.

not the music, infact...i quite like the flaming lips now and again.

I don't think Math Rock is really a genre, I think it is a good way to describe some music though. Saying that Polvo is math rock (if you know what math rock means) can givce a good description. Because saying a band is experimental, or indie, or alternative doesn't really describe the band. There are so many broad bands that fit into the experimental/indie/alternative genre.
