dear fellow guitarists ...

I am about to change the pre-amp tubes on my XXX super 40 and I am confused / not sure which one is the balanced tube. Bob from eurotubes told me that the one closest to the power-amp tubes is the one. But when the power-amp tubes are facing me there is one 12AX7 to the right and one exactly behind. Both are the same distance from the power amp tubes. Now, which one is the balanced one?
Please help !

Let me try to show what I am talking about ... this is how the layout looks

12AX7 12AX7 12AX7

EL34 EL34 12AX7

is the 12AX7 to the right of the el34 the balanced one ?

thanks

From FJAmods.com

EDIT: And I should clarify that V4 is the balanced phase inverter tube.

cool. Ok, so that means the one to the right of the power-amp tubes is the balanced one.

BTW, what would have happened if I had put the high gain tube in place of the balanced one?

It probably just wouldn't have sounded as good. It wouldn't damage anything though.
