any ideas on the easiest way to do a black and white checkerboard on my guitar? its already black but should i sand that off and start with white? also do i need to do a stencil or what?
Paint one color, dry, tape squares in the pattern, paint other color, dry, remove tape.
So essentially what you'd want to do in this situation, since the guitar is already black, is work out where you want the checkerboard, scuff sand the whole area, and mask off the parts you want to be black. Then spray a white primer on, then the white paint, then remove the masking tape and clear coat the whole thing.
