^ basically yes. but overdrive is usually asociated with lower gain levels.

basically when the signal from your guitar is clipped or compresed, it "distorts." technically there is no difference, but overdrive is comonly used to describe sublte distortion or the boosting of a signal via an "overdrive" pedal to increase the compresion/clipping in the pre-amp section of tube amps.

Overdrive is the act of pushing the tubes into a crunchy "overdriven" sound ("addingg gain"), distortion is just an extreme amount of gain.
