ok, well, my room is a medium sized room, so keep that in mind. anyways, i have a 120 watt amp (behringer v-vampire 2x10) and i was wondering that if i was playing with the distortion high and the volume on my guitar and amp all the way up, could i break my windows? the windows are across the room, but still, they are only about 4 or 5 yards from the amp.

If you pick it up and throw it, you will most definitly break the window.

they tested that theory on Mythbusters, except with singing. And with singing it is very possible, and I bet it is possible with the right frequency and acoustics with the guitar and amp, but I wouldn't try it.

in order to break a window, one would need to match the natural resonance of the glass, which is very very very very (enough verys?) unlikely
#6
no, you wont, in order to brake glass with sound the sound would have to be a solid "ringing" At the exact same frequency as the window, thats your lesson for the day,

I read once that the singer from Nitro would break wine glasses onstage by singing. Does anyone know of the authenticity of this?

i bet if it started to feedback and the feedback was changing pitch, eventually one of the pitches might break the window.....but feedback is uncontrollable so i doubt the same pitch would hold long enough to shatter the window

Why would you want to break a window, anyways?

^i dont think he wants to break the window, he wants to know if its safe to play in his room WITHOUT shattering the window

It's not impossible, it's unlikely.

...very unlikely.

But I'd love to see someone break glass with a guitar, especially a window rather than a glass becuase it seems like a glass would be easier.

Dude that amp isn't even loud lol.

maybe you could get a louer amp, 24 fret guitar with an FR, then do Dime harmonics until you rach the highest ntoes

i 2nd this idea...

but with the sound..i doubt it...i actually doubt a triple recto. would break it...but im not the master window breaker either

You won't. I've played with much louder amps, with many more speakers, much closer to a window than that and I've never broken a window. I also have a stereo system next to a window, never in listening to music has a window broken either. It is possible, but just so unlikely that you shouldn't worry unless you were trying to break them.

Yes, the singer from Nitro did break wine glasses on stage with his voice. It's not terribly hard, you just need to match the resonant frequency of the glass well, and have a decently powerful voice. And no, you will not break your windows by turning your amp up too loud.

Status Quo broke a glass on TV once with pure amp loudnes. Apparently, the correct note was a G flat.

Could have been faked though.

Anyway, in a medium-small room, and 120 watts, I'd be more worried about my ears.
#24
it wont break, unless you throw the amp at it (as previously stated)

however, i broke a glass with my JSX. it fell off the counter though. so the ground broke it

+1 to everything already said, and in addition to that, you can make a snare drum vibrate ( or at least with the two drummers I've played with) with a B. specifically, the 14th fret on the A string seems to work best. and obviously when it's not being played.

also if you were trying to find the natural frequency of something, it would probably be easier to do so using a fretless guitar (or bass) to give you the broadest range.

The real question is; Who has the balls [or the money ] to try and find a video of the right frequency and test it on their own windows?

The window isn't going to resound in the same way a crystal wine glass will. Maybe a really boomy bass will do the trick?

that was a great episode...that dude broke the glass and i was amazed

Sound = (usually Sine wave) Vibrations. Get it vibrating fast enough (higher pitch) and yes it can break glass.

Don't believe me? Crank up the volume, the gain, and keep the shape somewhere in the middle approaching high. Raise the mids and highs and play somewhere approaching the 12th fret of the high E string.
#31
^ Well the point is to do it without cranking your volume. If your amp was loud enough it could shatter glass with any note simply because the presumably large speakers in high multitude would move enough air to break the glass that way.

On mythbuster the tested it on a whine glass with singing, wineglasses are in no way similar to windows.

what's the point in being "philiosophical"?

Interesting question...

Wineglasses are thinner than windows, no way dude, otherwise you'd need to sing much louder to break it.

Well if you start swinging your guitar and start throwing your amp around, I wouldn't worry about your window breaking.

Why are you worried? Unless you are going to play a massive gig in your room, just don't do anything stupid as abovementioned and doing crank your amp to the max, the sheer vibrations can just shatter the window.

I broke my bedroom window with my silvertone piggyback amp which is 100 watts tubes. The bass did it. I cranked it up til the window started rattling and then cranked it some more. The window broke. That was in the late 70s and it's still broken today but patched up.

I had an airline 335 copy at the time.
