A Lo I D P Ly M A Lo I D P Ly M A

so this is obviously the g major scale with all the modes, so when ever i play a G Ionian i start at the third fret (Root G) i would then start the Dorian at the 5th fret is this
"G Dorian" even though it starts the note A or is it "A Dorian"

thanks man, another question i have is say im playing a song in G and i start improvising using the G Ionion can i move into A Dorian and should it sound right or do i have to play G Dorian,
so what im asking is, if my song is in th ekey of G, can i move through G Ionian, to A Dorian, to C Phrygian... and so on or do i have to just play them all in G

Ya, A Dorian will sound perfect. All the notes are the same it just produces different sounds when you play the modes over different chord progressions. Obviously playing the locrian mode starting on B over a C major progression is going to sound darker than playing a C ionian over the same prograssion. Play around with it.

^Well, then that's not exactly "playing locrian." You would play B locrian if you adjusted your progression to resolve on the Bdim chord. You are really only playing in the position of B locrian if you still end on C, and playing in the position is NOT playing the mode.
Looking for my India/Django.

I never knew that. So does that mean that whatever mode you're playing in, the backing chords should resolve on its root?
