How hard do you think it would be to build my own pickups? Cost? I was thinking of basing the design off of P-90's. I am going to put them in my Gibson SG. If anyone has any ideas or could tell me how difficult this will be, that would be pretty cool.
Thanks.

Building pickups isn't very expensive from what I hear the problem is the time and perfection. You need to wind the pickup a certain number of times (talking like a few thousand turns) in a certain way.

I have A LOT of time. I may even be able to do it at my work and get out of work since I work at a guitar shop (the only reason I'm asking you guys is so I can get more opinions before I ask my boss about it on Saturday, plus I don't think he's ever built pickups before). Does anyone know where I can get the wire, or if different wires make different sounds. I will be making one humbucker sized pickup for the Bridge position and one humbucker sized pickup for the Neck position.

thanks guys, I'm saving up for a Fender Twin Reverb right now, but my birthday is coming up (September 5th), so that should help. I'll probably start work on them in November. When I finish I'll make a post with pics and soundclips if anyone's interested.

you can make your own pickup winder, with a record player. you probably need about 8000 wraps, so you can time it using the rpm. use a 45rpm to go the fastest. you can actually make a winder out of legos too.

do a search for how to make a pickup winder
here is one made from a sewing machine and a fan

I built one based on the same parts as that. havnt tried it with actual wire, but i tried it with some thread on a bobbin for thread and it wound it quite evenly
