Hey guys, I posted this on the John Petrucci forums and they loved it over there...
so I thought I'd drop by this place and post it here. (havnt been here for ages!)

It's basically me playing a short piece using 16th notes at 220 beats per minute, alternate picking everynote. (the fastest I've ever picked!)

ENJOY www.myspace.com/jamesparrino (feel free to add me)

thanks guys

Well to be perfectly honest, this really didn't do much for me. Yeah, you can pick fast...and? I'd rather hear some music than just a straight zip of fast picking.
I mean, the least you could have done is made a song or something.

So, uh, I guess, it was good fast picking. No slurring, mutes, or anything of course.

Take a look at mine?

On the other hand, the Mario Bro's theme was AWESOME, I've heard a ton of people try this song, this was truly sweet. Great job.
I'm not very active here on UG currently.

Hey thanks, well there is a chord progression behind it, but it wasn't supposed to be a song, just a picking excercise. If you wanna hear me play in "songs" then check out my band stuff :-)

Glad you liked the mario brothers theme :-)

I will check out ur stuff and let you know what I think, cheers

erm is this supposed to impress? i mean fair enough u can do it but having played since you were 16 this is the least i would have expected. Plus it's hard to hear how simple the notes themselves are. I know you're proud of what you've acomplished and so you should be! But cant u be proud on your own without showing us, coz tbh other peoples finger excersizes dont interest me unless i can learn them.

Well considering the reaction I got on the petrucci forums, I thought you guys might dig it as well, but I guess not.
I suppose those guys are all shred and prog rock guitar fans, so they admire that kind of speed and accuracy, but sure it's not everyones cup of tea.

Appreciate your honesty, once again if you want to hear me playing songs, check out www.myspace.com/outlier

What's the point of recording a piece and being proud of your technique, if you can't share it with others?

I thought some of you guys might appreciate this, otherwise I would've just posted one of my regular songs like everyone else does, but I wanted to post something a little different.

I guess I'll leave it in the petrucci forums from now on :-(

Heeeeeeeey thanks man, maybe there's hope for this place after all :-)
Appreciate your comments muchly...

I'll invite you all to read a short excerpt from an interview with Dream Theater keyboardist JORDAN RUDESS, sums up my feelings on the topic.

Does virtuosity indeed have a place in a form of music that often prides itself on rawness? ?I have a different perspective,? says Jordan. ?You have to keep in mind that I?m coming from a classical, Juilliard-trained background, but I think that the better the musician is on an instrument, the more he can effectively express himself. So if somebody?s raw, what does that mean? That some thought you have, you?re not going to be able to play? What if you happen to be thinking of something that?s blazingly fast? Or that has some really amazing, intricate quarter-step bends on the guitar?
?To me, being a great musician means that you can play slower than anybody and if the passage you?re thinking of demands some blistering 128th-notes, you can play it better than anybody else, too. When I practice scales, it?s not just to play fast. My goal as a musician is to be able to play as slow, as fast, as expressively, as melodically, as well as I possibly can.?

Well, regarding Jordan and John.....playing that fast is one thing.....but playing that fast in perfect synch is absolutely incredible.

I think you'll find that a lot of people who don't like this type of playing are those who can't accomplish it themselves. I can't do it, but I still love to hear it. I'm a legato freak to the end. I'll cheat my ass right through it and won't make any excuses for it. LOL!

My God... their unisons are works of art arn't they....

Yeh I agree with you man, and if playing legato is what you want to do, then do it.
Look at Satriani, hardly picks a note, but what a beautiful liquid tone.

Oh Satch is a huge influence on me, no doubt.

I can't even begin to imagine the amount of time you must have spent with a metronome working on speed over the years. How long did it take before you started seeing some real results?

pretty siko, wish i could do that, well not realy cosm in a soft rock band but i wish i was that good lol

wow, smokin technique man, that is really impressive! That vid you have up there is great too man, you're a very talented individual. I dig your song writing and singing too, that's pretty rare when you can do both, and be that good at it. Killer chops bro. I could use some solo writing/practice advice if you get a chance.

Hey man thanks heaps, appreciate all your compliments.

I developed my abilities by studying a music degree, listening to all different kinds of music, practising very religiously, and applying all of my studies and listening to writing and performing my own music.

I hope this helps, if you want me to be more specific on a particular subject I will be happy to, just ask.

meh, i didnt like the playing as fast as you possibly can thing goin on, but i really enjoyed your other stuff, the bluesy kinda elavator music recording you got, was pretty sick.

your band stuff, lol you can play man. so diggin the riff in "One More Time", good music.
#20
sorry to ask sth like this...but what exactly is 220 beats per minute? and how many notes per second does that make?
#21
Congrats, you just picked 14.67 notes per second! Fast? Yes. Simple? Yes. Impressing? No.

Sounded like you played quite simple licks and as the recording was very short, I can't tell if it was a one of fluke. So my suggestion is, make a song with longer and more complicated alternate picking passages; you might impress someone that way.

You've got some picking chops under your belt, now you just gonna have to go to the next level and stop being mediocre.

Ok, Im going to be brutally honest. I would take this into SERIOUS consideration, I AM into shred. That didnt sound that hard, Not trying to sound like a dick but I mean thats awesome that you worked up to this speed, but why post it here. I would try to some sweeping if I were you now, or harder alternate picking runs. If you need any help getting some I would be happy to tab out some of my own and record how it should sound.

Good job, it was clean playing . Keep Rockin.

EDIT: Stratwizard beat me to it.

EDIT 2 : Why are you guys so amazed at this, this would take 2 weeks tops for an average guitar player to do. HmHmHMmH

aMeRiCaNsTrAt21 this piece was purely an example of an alternate picking run, it dosn't mean that this is the only thing I am capable of playing :-)

I do plenty of sweeping, and legato, and tapping, and lots of NON-shred, melodic playing, improvising and riffing.

If you think alternate picking at 220 bpm can be mastered in 2 weeks, I would really like to hear you post an example of yourself doing it, took me a while longer than that, but I salute anyone who can master it in a fortnight

Thanks guitarfan! mario theme owns!

220 bpm is the speed of the metronome, I was sub-dividing that and playing 4 notes per beat, so that means I was playing 14.67 notes per second. :-)

The picking was impressive man, not my thing at all, but it was still pretty cool for what it was. I was just dropping in to say that I definately agree with the dude from Dream Theater who said that musical talent is useful to express songwriting talent. I'm really a fan of bands that focus more on the melodic or lyrical content rather than sheer chops or whatever you want to regard it as, but I also think there is a certain amount of musical skill neccessary to express oneself adequately. A perfect example is Pavement's first album, Slanted and Enchanted. Brilliant, dare I say genious, songwriting, but the fact that at the time Stephen could barely play guitar and the drummer was a drunken ex-hippy really took away from the whole experience. The better musician you are, the better you can express yourself through song, and that's what really matters, so keep it up.

parrino, i dunno what these guys are pissed about. Normally i get pissed when i see people laying on the low E string and thinking they are good...

but no, this was actually cool, and artful, definitely my kind of music. You sound a bit like me, i started when i was 16 and i've been playing 6-8 hours a day since. Maybe i'll kickass to someday.
#34
Thanks so much man, if you keep up the 6 hours a day I'm sure you'll definately kick ass some day.

I don't get pissed about others really, everyone is entitled to their own oppinion and playing preference, and certainly this type of music is not for everyone, but I'm glad that you and some others enjoyed it. cheers

It was real fast for sure. Now if you could use that in a song it would be cool. By that I mean going diddly diddly ddly is neat but there must be a song and music ,thats whts really neat. Midi backup dont make it either . I believe you should rethink what is musically significant before you contine with your music carrer ,if, this is any indication of the direction you are going. I do admire the skill.

thanks alot cnorthern, glad you liked my bands stuff.

dave musselman, I appreciate your comments, as I said before, this is just a short piece and is not the ONLY thing I'm capable of playing, check out the rest of the songs on my page and my bands stuff on www.myspace.com/outlier for a better idea of the direction I'm going.

So, Yea, I dunno why people are giving you grief about it not being a song, this section of the forum isn't just for songs...I mean 220 bpm is really fast. I've only been able to get up to 184 bpm and a little faster when i'm sweeping. But yea dude, good job You should make some exercises where you combine both sweeping and ap..this one exercises I do is i'll start on like the A string do a run to the High E string do a simple 3 string sweep a couple times and 5 string sweep back up to A string and repeat. Just a suggestion keep up the good work dude.
