Ok so i tried to strip down my old austin strat copy which to my dismay turned out to have a polyurethane finish. Useing extremely strong strpper, i was only able to get spots of the finish off to get down to the wood. I've sanded it all down smooth and think i have the finish off but not most of the stain but since i hear that gold top finishes show imperfections extremely well will it turn out to look like crap once i paint it?

I'd say get a good white base coat down, and then sand it so it's as flawless as possible. Then do the gold.

I'd fix the base surface before messing around with sanding down primer 20 times.
