Do you know your modes? The ascending melodic minor scale is just like the dorian mode, but the 7th is raised half a step.

Descending melodic minor is the same as natural minor.

for melodic minors you raise the 6th and 7th up half a tone on the way up and on the way down play them as in a natural minor.
