Okay, so I'm kind of confused about this:


Say you have a song that uses the chords:

C
Dm
Em
F
G
Am

The song would be defined as being in the key of "C major" or "A minor", right (If that's wrong, say so)?

So, if you have a song in C major/A minor and you want to add a solo to it; does the solo have to be in the C major/A minor scale, or can it be in say, C/A lydian, or locrian?

Those chords are in C Major. You've listed all the chords in the key of C Major, except Bdim.

And scale choice is up to, you could play C Ionian over all of them... you could play modally.. it's entirely up to you.

An example of playing those modally would be..


C Major - C Ionian.
D Minor - D Dorian.
E Minor - E Phrygian.
F Major - F Lydian.
G Major - G Mixolydian.
A Minor - A Aeolian.

I knew there was B chord in there somewhere, I usually only look at major and minor though, lol.

So, as long as the root note of the scale is the same as the chord that's being played, I can play any scale of the root note in the solo?

And also, does the same apply to vocal melodies?

it's not entirely that simple, but if you mean that for every chord you play the associated mode, then yes, that would be Pitch Axis Theory, and it would work just fine

Gah, found that a bit confusing. I think.

Okay so ignoring that. I CAN just play a solo in C ionian over all of the chords? And the whole of the vocal melody could be in C ionian too?

you could do that, but in my opinion playing C Ionian over a minor chord doesn't bring the minor tonality of the chord out as well as playing a minor-based mode like Phrygian or Dorian over it

just use notes that sound good with whatever chord is playing

so if its playing like Am C G EM

when Am is being played use notes like C,E,A,F,D,

When C is being played use notes like C,E,A,F,G

and so on.......

at least thats how I write solos , i dont usually stick to one scale, but to the chord that is being played

Would you still switch modes for each one? So, you're only staying on one mode for a second or two?


And Tamargo, that sounds so much simpler , I think I should maybe give that a try.

what would the scale and key be?
