I have a limited edition Epiphone Les Paul Custom with three pickups.

Not only does it play better than any Gibson LP I've played, or any of my friends have played, but it sounds better, as well.

And I receive compliments non stop about how awesome it looks.

^is that the same as a black beauty?
I've got something in my front pocket for you.
Why don't you reach down in my pocket and see what it is?
Then grab onto it, it's just for you.
Give a little squeeze and say: "How do you do?"

does the fact it has 3 pickups and 3-way tog.. mean it sounds different to say standard or custom with 2?

If you think that any Epiphone sounds better than the actual Gibson then you need to get your ears checked, something's clearly wrong. That said, some Epi's do sound nice, but it really varies from guitar to guitar. I'd go into a store and try one out before buying it... since there is less quality control with Epiphone, there is more variance in quality.
Main setup:

ESP Eclipse
PRS Torero SE
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster head, 2x12 cab
FX: Crybaby Slash Wah, Ibanez TS9x, Mesa Boogie Throttle Box, Boss TU-2, BF-3, DD-3, PS-6, RC-3, etc.

I'm pretty sure the Elitist Les Paul Custom is the best Epiphone, but it's not that much more expensive than a Gibson Les Paul Studio and I think the Elitists are being discontinued.

high end epi's and usually better made, compared to low end gibby's, and my ears are just fine. thank you very much.

Jenny needs to sow her wild oats with random Gibsons and Taylors she picks up in bars before she settles down with a PRS.

Wow. An entire topic plagued with wrong statements.

First of all, a good Epi WILL sound better than a low end Gibson. It's a fact - accept it. Low end Gibson's are garbage. Particularly the Faded Special line. A decent Epi will blow a low end Gibson out of the water. Just because it's an Epiphone it doesn't mean it's a bad instrument.

The best Epi's are the Elitist line. They are usually very close in quality and sound to their Gibson counterparts. They also use USA hardware and electronics. They are nearly all cheaper than Gibson LP Studios. The Elitist Les Pauls go for $1000-$1100 depending on the model.

Low end Epi's like the $99 Jr. Special and Special II are junk and are usually made from plywood.

As for the "best" Epi, it depends entirely on the player. For cleans, a nice Elitist hollowbody or semihollowbody, and for anything else, an Elitist LP or SG should work.
