whats the real difference between these 2?

i know reverb is supposed to sound like if you were in a big room.

but what is delay for?

and also what are some ways to use these in your effects arsenal?

Reverb is used to create an ambient and 3d sort of sound.

Delay can be used for ambience too, if the sound is short and not too loud. THis was used often on the vocals in rock songs. Joe Satriani often has a delay pedal on to create this sort of ambience. You don't really hear it, but it adds dimension to the sound.

It can also be used as a doubling effect, or to create wierd echo sounds
(eg. Guns n' Roses "welcome to the jungle", Dream Theatre "Metropolis" introes)

Old delays used a magnetic tape to record the sound. The repeated signal wasn't the best quality, and it had this gradually degenerating effect. They were also awfully noisy and used for feedback and KERAZZY noise abuse.
