Nickel strings sound warmer, Steel ones sound brighter. Nickel-plated steel is in between.

Fatter strings have a heavier sound, but are harder to play.

Thin strings don't exert as much tension and are easier to play, but might not sound as full.

I use a D'addario 10 set. The ultimate allround string (at least for me)

DR Dime's, they are meant for all kinds of heavy stuff. I have them on my guitar and they are awesome.

seconded, I use the Dime Signatures and I rape them... They last me about 2-4 months a set so its good.
