well all pickups have coils. What youre talking is rail pickups and pickups with poles.

Rail pickups have just a straight rail(s) that pickup string vibration. The other kind have just one pole for each string.

nice...but is there a dif in sound say between a single coil and a quadrail (i think that is the signle coil equivalent)?

A quadrail is a pickup with 4 rails, which is equivalent to 4 rows of pole pieces, which is basically 2 humbuckers. 1 rail = 1 pole piece row = singe coil, 2 rails = 2 pole piece rows = humbucker and so on.

I don't think there is a big difference between a rail and pole pieces though.
