Im playing an A triad like this...

---
-5-
-6-
-7-
---
---

Which variant to A would you suggest to make it sound brighter?

The voicing you have is really nice though, I think it does sound bright.

im wondering why this chord you showed me has 4 different notes in it. I read that chords should have three different notes in them, no?

Actually before I tried to do Asus4 and It didnt sound nice, but I changed my rhythm pattern and the progression sounds pretty cool with Asus4. Thanks anyways.

|-9-| - C#.
|-10-| - A.
|-9-| - E.
|-11-| - C#.
|-12-| - A.

A - C# - E... I make that three different notes.

Triads should have three different notes in them, yes.

Chords can have as many notes as they can have, which is twelve.

A version of A that i really like is

e - 10
B - 9
G - 10
D - 11
A - 0
E - 0

or

e - 5
B - 2
G - 2
D - 2
A - 0
E - 0

I would play what you have, maybe with the A note on the high E held also!

I just tried that and it sounds very nice. It also helps to bring out the A since you added another.

I like the A's that are:

E|-5-| |-9--|
B|-5-| |-10-|
G|-6-| or |-9--|
D|-7-| |-11-|
A|---| |----|
E|---| |----|

(I think the second one is the right key.) To make a chord have a brighter sound, you're going to want to use the highest strings a lot. Not necessarily a higher voicing (in terms of position on the neck, closer to the nut or the pickups) but using the highest strings.

We were talking about this chord last night

I love that chord as well. Possibly my favourite chord.

Try adding the extra A note, an octave lower:

e|--0--|
B|--5--|
G|--6--|
D|--7--|
A|--0--|
E|-----|

i love it to, but i love Aadd9 even more. it really establishes the key centre of A really well.

like this
-0- --9--
-2- --12--
-4- --9--
-2- --11--
-0- --0--
--- or

or try Eadd9 in open position. chord formula majadd9 1 3 5 9
minadd9(really dark) 1 b3 5 9

Thanks guys. Im wondering if there are any links to something that tells me where all the triads are on the fretboard?

hah. you gotta find em.. there would be thousands upon thousands. a major triad would be 1 - 3 - 5, a minor triad would be 1 - b3 - 5. for A, it's A C# E. so just find your own fingerings and voicings for the different triads on your own.

Ya I was afraid of that lol. What I do right now is I play an open chord and see if I want it to sound a bit different so I decide whether I want it power, barre, triad or whatever. OR I play a major triad that I know like on the 2nd 3rd and 4th strings that 'A' triad I showed in the beginning is moveable. So Ill just go from there.

and the beautiful thing about it is just lift up your first finger and let the b string ring and you have a really cool Aadd9 voicing. this A chord was used in george harrison's "if i needed someone." in the verse, they slide between this A chord and a G6/9 chord. the G6/9 chord is really easy, just slide all the fretted notes down two frets.

this is more like a power chord since it's missing the third so is not a triad and technically not a chord but still sounds cool
